Position Overview
Assistant Professor – Agronomy (Conrad, MT) at Montana State University Western Triangle Agricultural Research Center (WTARC). Tenure‑track, 12‑month appointment. Faculty Rank: TT. Salary commensurate with experience. Emphasis: 80% research, 10% teaching, 10% service.
Duties and Responsibilities
Develop a field‑oriented research program to improve the economic and environmental sustainability of dryland and irrigated crop production systems in the Golden Triangle area.
Conduct research related to nutrient management, irrigation and crop water use, and cropping systems for cereal, pulse, oilseed and alternative crops.
Apply precision agriculture technology and other specialized agronomy tools.
Secure extramural funding from state, regional, national agencies and the agricultural industry.
Mentor graduate students, provide guest lectures, collaborate with faculty across the campus and other research centers.
Participate in outreach to producers and stakeholders, serve the department, college, university and the scientific community.
Required Qualifications
Ph.D. in Agronomy, Crop Science, Soil Science or a related discipline at the time of hire.
Hands‑on experience in agronomic field research: planning, designing, implementing, and interpreting research using accepted scientific methodology.
Peer‑reviewed journal article record and outreach materials commensurate with training.
Valid driver’s license and ability to operate research vehicles. Must obtain a Montana driver’s license within 60 days if holding an out‑of‑state license.
Must acquire a Montana Government Pesticide Applicator License within 3 months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
Post‑doctoral experience.
Experience in crop nutrient management research.
Experience with dryland and irrigated crop production.
Documented grant‑writing skills and successful record of securing extramural funds.
Personal experience operating field research equipment such as tractors, seeders, and combines.
Strong collaboration and engagement with diverse students, staff, colleagues, and external constituents.
Demonstrated leadership potential.
Key Responsibilities
Advance MSU’s innovative and impactful agricultural field research.
Maintain excellent oral and written communication skills.
Develop a successful interdisciplinary agronomic field research and education program addressing the needs of Golden Triangle producers.
Build and maintain a research team.
Represent MSU and the Department of Research Centers professionally and courteously.

Must obtain a Montana Pesticide Applicator License within 3 months of hire.
Must obtain a Montana driver’s license within 60 days if holding an out‑of‑state license.

Work in the field, navigate uneven terrain on foot, work in inclement weather, lift up to 60 pounds occasionally.
