Housing and Neighborhood Preservation, a department with the City of Virginia Beach, connects people to resources to help them obtain, maintain or sustain housing in vibrant, well-maintained neighborhoods. Our Homeless Services division is seeking a motivated, compassionate, customer-service oriented individual to fill the role of a Family Shelter Caseworker.

Under general supervision from the Homeless Services Coordinator, the Family Shelter Caseworker will ensure the well-being of both participants and volunteers while serving the needs of 10 vulnerable families who are experiencing homelessness. The Caseworker will support all aspects of shelter operations while providing patient, respectful, client-centric, and trauma-informed care and support with the goal of connecting families to permanent housing as quickly as possible.

Representative Work Functions and Responsibilities

Maintain a safe, supportive environment and build respectful, professional relationships with participants. Monitor facility to maintain the safety of participants and shelter space. Assist participants with shelter routines and in following all shelter procedures. Help participants work through possible discord with others living in the shelter.

Ensure Housing Stability Plans are established with each household 24 hours after program entry. Work to ensure shelter participants are exiting shelter and going into permanent housing in the shortest possible time. Link shelter clients to relevant and appropriate resources to improve housing outcomes. Communicate observations and interactions with participants to the other shelter staff and Program Manager through daily log. Ensure file documentation is complete, accurate, verified, and updated in paper and/or electronic systems as required.

Assist with meals as needed, following all food safety guidelines. Intervene in client crises. Keep shelter clean, restock supplies. Participate in staff meetings and relevant training as required. Adhere to all Departmental policy, procedures, and professional code of ethics. Complete all duties as assigned. Other duties as required.
