Job Summary This position is responsible for front-end technical leadership in mold development, including estimating, Design for Manufacturability (DFM), tooling strategy, vendor sourcing/management, tool design reviews, mold development support, and launch readiness. The Tooling Engineer will determine tooling approaches, interface with internal project engineers and operations teams, and collaborate with outside tooling suppliers to ensure high-quality molds are delivered on time, within budget, and meeting customer and manufacturing requirements. This role is critical in establishing early-phase tooling directions to ensure robust mold performance throughout the lifecycle.
Responsibilities
Generate detailed mold/tooling cost estimates and assumptions.
Lead and deliver comprehensive DFM feedback to internal teams and customers.
Conduct mold design reviews and approve tool construction approach.
Evaluate and select external tooling vendors; manage supplier relationships.
Develop mold specifications, standards, and sourcing documentation.
Track supplier timing and deliverables; hold vendors accountable.
Guide mold trials and development through IQ/OQ readiness.
Support troubleshooting during mold testing and development builds.
Maintain documentation and release records per quality system requirements (including PPAP/IQMS workflows).
Participate in value analysis/value engineering and manufacturability initiatives.
Travel to suppliers and SMC facilities to support builds, trials, and qualifications as needed.
Other duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent practical experience (Journeyman Mold maker preferred and/or 3–5 years tooling engineering experience).
Proven experience in injection molding tooling design, construction, and development.
Strong understanding of DFM principles, mold materials, hot runner systems, and precision machining.
Experience estimating mold builds and evaluating supplier proposals.
Design software literacy (SolidWorks, Moldflow knowledge preferred).
Excellent communication, vendor management, and cross‑functional collaboration skills.
Contract manufacturing and medical device industry experience preferred.
Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required.
Desirable Qualifications
Experience managing outsourced tool builds across domestic and international suppliers.
Knowledge of mold validation protocols (IQ/OQ/PQ) and PPAP documentation.
Working knowledge of automation, EOAT, and secondary manufacturing processes.
Experience developing mold cost models and supplier performance metrics.
Familiarity with 3D mold design review tools (e.g., Wildfire, Creo, SolidWorks add‑ins).
Understanding of cleanroom molding requirements and medical regulatory environments.
Ability to interpret and apply GD&T and tolerance stack principles.
Strong problem‑solving and root‑cause analysis skills using structured methodologies (8D, DMAIC, Fishbone, etc.).
Continuous improvement mindset with exposure to Lean/6‑Sigma principles.
Ability to lead technical discussions and mentor others in tooling fundamentals.
ADA Requirements
Ability to sit for extended periods working at a computer.
Frequent interaction with shop floor and manufacturing environments.
Frequent handling of mold components, engineering CAD files, and prints.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
