Major Duties and Responsibilities

Receives both state and superior court appeals for processing for submission to higher courts and/or appellate courts (Court of Appeals and Supreme Court) to include prisoners' habeas corpus actions. Preparing criminal and civil appeals for state and superior courts for at a minimum of nine (9) judges - 7 Superior, 2 State, and also several senior judges whose cases are appealed. Coordinating with judges for docketing/scheduling of status conference within mandated 120 days. Performing proper documentation and cataloging of the appellate documents to include pulling records both in-house or from archives in the warehouse. Detailed review and confirmation of all case filings including documenting case histories and case history activity to include proper court transcript submissions. Tracking the progress of appellate procedure to meet the 20-day deadline for submission to appellate courts and/or proper compliance with a timely procedure to request deadline extensions. Verifying documents for appeal. Indexing appellate record. Uploading documents for appeal record. Submitting records to the appellate court. Preparing cost billings to attorneys. Collecting and recording payment information. Staying abreast of law and policies governing the clerk's appellate process and procedures. Performs other related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of relevant state laws and guidelines governing the Office of the Clerk of Superior Court. Knowledge of modern office procedures. Knowledge of the operations and functions of local and state court systems. Knowledge of legal terminology and required record-keeping procedures and deadlines. Knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting practices. Skill in operating standard office equipment such as a typewriter, calculator, copier, microfiche machine, and facsimile machine. Skill in the use of computers, standard business software applications, and specialized software applications used by the courts. Skill in basic mathematics. Skill in dealing with the public. Skill in oral and written communication. Minimum Educational and Training Requirements Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Retirement Plan The Columbus Consolidated Government offers a defined benefit retirement plan to eligible employees who work in General Government and in Public Safety. Employees in the pension plan must meet both age and years of service requirements to qualify for retirement. The current vesting period is ten years, and the current pension contribution rate is 8% of your gross salary.
