We are seeking an experienced and mission-driven Director of Advancement to join our leadership team and help expand the reach and impact of our work.

About the Role Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer and serving as a key member of the leadership team, the Director of Advancement is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive strategies to advance the mission of Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties through philanthropy, marketing, and community engagement.

This individual will lead a talented team overseeing fundraising, volunteer services, marketing, and public relations, ensuring cohesive messaging, consistent branding, and alignment with the organization's goals and values. The Director of Advancement will be instrumental in expanding our visibility in the community, fostering meaningful partnerships, and nurturing a strong culture of philanthropy among staff, volunteers, and supporters.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Strategic Fund Development Develop, implement, and oversee comprehensive fundraising strategies to support annual and long-term goals, including major giving, planned giving, annual appeals, grants, and special events. Collaborate with the CEO to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors and prospects, ensuring alignment with the organization's financial sustainability plan. Oversee the advancement database and donor management systems to ensure accurate and timely recordkeeping. Evaluate all fundraising initiatives to ensure ROI and mission alignment. Community Engagement & Relationship Building

Serve as an ambassador for Hospice in the community, fostering partnerships with individuals, businesses, civic groups, healthcare providers, and philanthropic organizations. Represent Hospice at community events, networking functions, and partner meetings to enhance visibility and strengthen relationships. Collaborate with leadership to engage key stakeholders in advocacy and awareness activities that advance the Hospice mission. Serve as a member on the Veteran's Committee. Donor Relations & Pipeline Development

Maintain a portfolio of major donors and prospects, with measurable goals for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Coordinate donor recognition programs, events, and personalized communications. Ensure timely acknowledgments, reports, and updates to donors and sponsors. Promote planned giving opportunities and long-term philanthropic partnerships. Grant Development & Management

Identify grant opportunities aligned with strategic goals and community needs. Prepare compelling proposals and manage compliance with reporting requirements. Maintain a grant calendar to track deadlines, submissions, and reporting obligations. Collaborate with program and finance teams to ensure alignment and accountability for grant-funded initiatives. Event Planning & Execution

Plan, organize, and execute major fundraising and community events, including the annual gala, golf outing, community breakfast, and other donor engagement functions. Develop event budgets, sponsorship packages, and promotional materials to ensure financial success and alignment with organizational goals. Oversee logistics including venue selection, vendor management, guest registration, program flow, and post-event follow-up. Work closely with the Advancement team and event volunteers to deliver a high-quality experience for attendees and sponsors. Track event performance metrics, evaluate outcomes, and recommend improvements for future events. Marketing, Communications & Public Relations

Oversee all marketing and communications efforts to ensure consistent, mission-driven messaging across all channels. Manage relationships with outside marketing, PR, and graphic design vendors to ensure high-quality deliverables and cost-effective outcomes. Direct the design, production, and distribution of print and digital materials including brochures, mailers, newsletters, quarterly and annual reports, and donor communications. Supervise website content, social media presence, and community calendar postings to ensure timely, accurate, and engaging public information. Collaborate with external advertising partners to maintain visibility across local and regional media outlets. Ensure that all external communications adhere to brand standards and reflect the Hospice's mission, vision, and values. Volunteer Services Oversight

Provide leadership and strategic direction to the Volunteer Services Department, ensuring alignment with Hospice's mission and regulatory standards. Oversee all volunteer recruitment, training, engagement, and compliance activities through the Volunteer Services Coordinator. Support the development of new volunteer initiatives to expand community participation and enhance patient and family support. Ensure that volunteer data, credentialing, and records are maintained accurately through the HRIS system. Review and update volunteer policies and procedures in collaboration with the Volunteer Services Coordinator and HR. Recognize and celebrate volunteer contributions through events and communications in partnership with Advancement staff. Leadership, Planning & Evaluation

Provide mentorship and direction to advancement and volunteer staff, fostering a collaborative and mission-driven culture. Develop and manage the Advancement Department budget and ensure efficient allocation of resources. Create and monitor annual goals, metrics, and performance indicators for fundraising, marketing, and volunteer engagement. Report regularly to the CEO on advancement outcomes and strategic priorities. Partner with leadership to integrate advancement goals into the organization's overall strategic plan. Board and External Relations

Serve as the staff liaison to the Board of Directors on matters related to marketing, fundraising, and public outreach. Coordinate with the Board's Advancement, Nominating, and Community Engagement Committees to support strategic initiatives. Provide updates, materials, and reports to support Board decision-making and visibility efforts. Collaborate with Board members to strengthen their role as ambassadors for Hospice in the community. Compliance & Ethical Standards

Maintain accountability and compliance with all state and federal fundraising regulations and ethical standards (AFP Code of Ethics). Ensure that all donor and volunteer information is maintained in accordance with HIPAA, confidentiality, and data protection requirements. Promote transparency and trust in all advancement-related communications and transactions. Requirements

Required Qualifications and Skills

Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred (communications, nonprofit management, public relations, or related field). Minimum 5-7 years of progressive experience in advancement, fundraising, marketing, or communications. Demonstrated success managing development programs, donor relationships, and external vendors. Strong understanding of nonprofit marketing and branding principles. Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Proficiency in CRM and donor management software, HRIS systems, and Microsoft Office Suite. Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and lead cross-functional teams. Ability to represent Hospice professionally with compassion and authenticity. Knowledge of and commitment to hospice philosophy and values.
