SPECIAL EDUCATION PARAPROFESSIONALS (Crisis, 1:1, Sub-Separate, Instructional)
Number of Positions: Until Filled
REPORTS TO: Works under the supervision of the classroom teacher who is responsible to the School Principal and Special Education Director as appropriate.
SUMMARY: Special Education Paraprofessionals will support the needs of special education students. They will assist teachers with various tasks including instruction, support, reinforcement, and parent outreach.
DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS POSITION INCLUDE: • Distributes and collects workbooks, paper and other materials for instruction. • Reads to students, listens to students read, and participates in other forms of oral communications with students. • Works with small groups of students to reinforce materials initially introduced by the teacher. • Assists individual children in need of special attention. • Operates equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes. • Assists students in the library or media center or other locations throughout the school. • Corrects objective-type tests and quizzes and records grades. • Catalogs and files instructional materials and maintains an inventory of supplies an equipment and prepares orders or requisitions for needed material. • Assists classroom teacher with implementation of behavior management programs and plans • Other related duties as assigned by the classroom teacher.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS • Minimum of an Associate's Degree or passing ParaPro test with a high school diploma or equivalency. • Experience working with school aged children is preferred. • Proficient in English Bilingual Preferred
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS • Ability to move in and out of the office, classrooms, buildings, and up and down stairs. • Must possess mobility to work in a classroom setting and to use standard equipment, including a computer • Strength to lift and carry materials weighing up to 20 pounds • Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen • Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. • Strength to lift and/or carry materials/items/persons weighing up to 75 pounds with assistance as the students may need positioning. • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent of Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: • Current authorization to work in the United States. • Meets all mandated health screening requirements • A record free of criminal violations that would prohibit public school employment. • Adheres to the Code of Professional Conduct for School Employees • Complies with drug-free workplace rules, board policies, and administrative guidelines/procedures. • Ability to establish working relationships with co-workers and function as part of a cohesive team. • Commitment to keep current with skills essential to the objectives of the position.
WORK YEAR: Full-time (8 Hours Daily), 182 Days/Annually
SALARY: In accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Lawrence Federation of Paraprofessionals and the Lawrence Public Schools.
