Bala Consulting Engineers is a 200-person engineering firm headquartered just outside of Philadelphia in Wayne, PA with full-service offices in New York, NY, Boston, MA, Baltimore, MD, and Washington, DC.
We are seeking an ambitious individual to serve as a Commissioning Project Manager (CxPM) with expertise in mechanical/controls systems based out of our Wayne, PA office.
This position will place a successful candidate into a team of industry leading commissioning/QA‑QC mechanical systems testing engineers who lead the Commissioning process and provide technical oversight of the testing of mechanical equipment, controls and distribution systems. Project management/oversight includes, but is not limited to, mechanical system(s) upgrades in existing facilities, new mechanical systems testing (new construction) for Fortune 500 companies throughout the U.S. Projects include data centers, trading floors, broadcast facilities, high‑rise infrastructure, healthcare, and high‑end office HVAC systems. Scope includes ASHRAE Level‑1 through Level‑5 Commissioning, LEED Cx, Energy Code Cx, Retro Cx on mechanical infrastructure equipment, distribution and controls systems. It also includes predictive preventative maintenance program planning and execution, and systemic and component troubleshooting throughout the commissioning process.
We will be selecting a candidate who thrives on challenges and constantly pushes the norm. This role requires the ability to develop clients and attract new business, manage internal teams, and execute multiple projects (of long and short duration) concurrently while developing and assisting in growing a group that is capable of executing the Cx process on projects on a regional and basis. This person will also support sales and business development efforts by establishing, maintaining and cultivating client relationships. Suitable candidates need to possess knowledge and experience with industry standards and latest technologies in mechanical systems infrastructure. The ability to lead Cx projects and teams, communicate and work with clients, owner’s representatives, facility engineers and Bala’s multi‑discipline staff and project teams are essential.
The CxPM is viewed as a dynamic and entrepreneurial position that helps drive change, internally and externally, through the firm. The CxPM is responsible for not only their projects but helping those around them. At Bala, we believe in collaboration and actively share work and knowledge across all five of our offices.
Roles and Responsibilities
Manage Cx projects – serve as a project manager on select projects in the Cx Group. Project types include data centers, new builds, renovations, fit‑outs and infrastructure upgrades, LEED Cx, Energy Code Cx and Retro Cx.
Client‑facing responsibilities: reviewing RFPs, attending pre‑bid walkthroughs, writing proposals, test scripts, and reports; planning of work, execution and day‑to‑day management of internal teams and clients.
Provide all management functions including scope responsibilities, client management, scheduling, and financials.
Assist other CxPMs across all locations of the enterprise.
Develop a core group of assistant project managers eventually capable of performing independently on similar project types.
Travel to project sites as needed and be willing to work various hours (days, nights, weekends etc.) to support project commissioning activities.
Mentor Staff
Be a technical resource for the staff.
Manage/schedule quality control reviews to reinforce technical lessons and company processes.
Complete internal peer reviews and provide input in multi‑discipline page turns, across all offices, to assist in the development of a comprehensive design.
Manage/schedule document reviews prior to all major project deliverables.
Project Staffing Support
Review workforce projections and determine their relation to staffing.
Identify times and strategies to manipulate design schedules to work with staffing.
Provide input on individual staff member performance, advancement, and potential.
Participate in staff performance reviews when appropriate.
Drive ownership, accountability and culture through the company.
Interact with partners and executives on a regular basis to further the growth and quality agenda of the firm.
Marketing / Business Development Support
Identify potential business opportunities.
Work with the leadership team to develop fees on complex projects.
Develop and maintain client relationships.
Grow the volume and footprint of the office market sectors.
Qualifications At least eight (8) years’ experience in commissioning or adjacent field (construction, owner’s representative, etc.)
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or other relevant field
PE/CEM/CBCP/BCxP
Data center experience
Experience managing projects and people
Strong interpersonal and team building skills
Strong technical writing skills
Knowledge of building codes
Knowledge of industry best practices and the latest technologies for mechanical/controls systems commissioning
Knowledge of electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems – a plus
