Surface Maintenance Mechanic

As a Surface Maintenance Mechanic (Title 32), WG-5801-10, you will perform the following duties: Troubleshoots, performs maintenance and major repairs on heavy-duty mobile equipment, combat, tactical and automotive vehicles. Troubleshoots equipment and diagnoses the cause of mechanical failures by means of visual and auditory checks and/or uses test equipment. Removes and disassembles engines and major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, and fuel, hydraulic, and oil pressure systems. Independently performs repairs and maintenance functions in remote locations. Conducts readiness and repair inspections on vehicles and associated equipment. May maintain and repair electronics communication equipment. Assists in the maintenance of production reports and records. Performs other duties as assigned. Conditions of employment: National Guard membership is required. This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment. Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform. Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership. Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service. Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation. May be required to successfully complete a trial period. Participation in direct deposit is mandatory. This position is located at a bargaining unit and eligible for union representation. Who can apply: Group I - All qualified Male/Female Enlisted Personnel Enlisted Member (E1/PV1-E7/SFC) or currently employed in the Virginia Army National Guard Military Technician Program. Group II - All qualified Virginia Army National Guard Male/Female Enlisted Member (E1/PV1-E7/SFC) regardless of employment status. Military Grades: Enlisted Member (E1/PV1-E7/SFC) General Experience: Applicant must have experience or training which demonstrates knowledge of equipment to be able to do routine jobs, simple preventative maintenance tasks, and use common tools and equipment in the line of work. Specialized Experience: Applicant must have at least 18 months of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the WG-09 level, or equivalent pay band in other pay systems in the Federal government. This experience may also have been obtained in the private sector, but must demonstrate that it is comparable to the WG grade indicated.
