Responsibilities In this role, the attorney is responsible for analyzing complex legal and factual issues, conducting extensive research, and developing well‑reasoned legal strategies. The attorney independently creates and presents defense strategies on behalf of clients, prepares complex pleadings, written discovery, depositions, petitions for reconsideration, and trial briefs with a high degree of autonomy. Collaboration with Claims partners is essential to achieve optimal outcomes for Hartford insureds. The attorney provides timely and effective communication, legal advice, and support to clients while maintaining professional diplomacy in interactions with courts, witnesses, opposing counsel, and co‑counsel. The attorney facilitates the prompt and efficient resolution of cases, prepares and presents witnesses and evidence in trials, hearings, arbitrations, and alternative dispute resolution proceedings, and researches, drafts, files, and argues appellate briefs in review courts. The role includes participation in team huddles, conducting in‑house training for junior associates and claims partners, and engaging in claims file reviews. To maintain a high level of professional expertise, the attorney regularly attends continuing legal education seminars.
Qualifications Staff Attorney
Minimum of 3 years of legal practice experience handling complex Workers' Compensation cases.
JD from an accredited law school and license to practice in the state of California.
Trial experience preferred.
Positive minded and collaborative team‑player attitude.
Strong legal research and writing skills.
Solid MS Office proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Lexis Nexis experience is a plus.
Self‑directed with excellent organizational and prioritization skills.
Strong computer skills and the ability to quickly leverage new software.
Senior Staff Attorney
Minimum of 5 years of legal practice experience handling complex life and pension Workers' Compensation cases.
JD from an accredited law school and license to practice in the state of California.
Trial experience preferred.
Positive minded and collaborative team‑player attitude.
Excellent legal research and writing skills.
Strong MS Office proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Lexis Nexis experience is a plus.
Self‑directed with excellent organizational and prioritization skills.
Strong computer skills and the ability to quickly leverage new software.
Work Arrangement This position is a remote work opportunity. The WCAB is virtual and requires in‑person appearances for expedited hearings and trial only. The selected candidate will travel within Oakland, San Francisco, and Santa Rosa, California. We offer flexible work arrangements and enjoy a business casual work environment.
Compensation The listed annualized base pay range is $114,800 – $192,000. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short‑term or annual bonuses, long‑term incentives, and on‑the‑spot recognition.
