The Imagine Group is recruiting for a
Residential Underwriter
on behalf of our client, a technology and innovation company based in
Buffalo, NY . The company operates at the intersection of engineering, advanced manufacturing, and applied research, partnering with both public and private sector clients.
In this role, you will be primarily responsible for re‑underwriting previously closed mortgage loans. This includes conducting comprehensive due diligence on representation and warranty review assignments to ensure: (i) the borrower’s creditworthiness; and (ii) full compliance of underwriting and closing documentation with applicable requirements and guidelines. You will also confirm that the property provides acceptable collateral for the loan. This role requires a thorough working knowledge of credit analysis and the ability to review and interpret credit reports, income and asset documentation, liabilities, property appraisals, and title reports to verify that each loan under review meets underwriting guidelines and standards for sale in the secondary market.
Base pay range $90,000.00/yr - $95,000.00/yr
Role & Responsibility This role requires a thorough working knowledge of credit analysis and the ability to review and interpret credit reports, income and asset documentation, liabilities, property appraisals, and title reports to verify that each loan under review meets underwriting guidelines and standards for sale in the secondary market.
Tasks That Will Lead To Your Success
Complete predetermined testing associated with Representation and Warranties
Prepare written documentation regarding results on testing
Strong knowledge of residential mortgage underwriting; including income, asset, credit, and property underwriting; (consisting of recalculating income/assets, DTI, etc.)
Analyze complex self‑employed tax returns and financial documents
Analyze and evaluate collateral through appraisals and other applicable evaluation tools
Review fraud detection results used in underwriting
Review and understand the Preliminary and Final Title Policy
Thorough review and understanding of the mortgage process flow from origination to closing
Strong knowledge of CFPB TRID QM/ATR and TILA rules and requirements
Experience with Compliance Ease and Compliance Analyzer is a plus
Assist in UAT testing of internal processing system updates
Assist in the review of new deal documents when requested
Maintain familiarity with mortgage industry regulations updates and underwriting guidelines
Mentor and train other team members
Qualifications That Will Help You Thrive
5-7 years of experience in the residential mortgage industry
Minimum of 3-5 years of recent experience in mortgage underwriting
Knowledge of applicable industry tools such as Core Logic, Lexis/ Nexis, AM Best, National Appraisal Registry, PACER, ComplianceEase
Thorough understanding of mortgage lending, state and federal regulatory requirements including Reg Z, RESPA, Fair Lending, and TRID
Understanding of secondary market requirements and underwriting policies, and procedures within required areas
Experience with condominium and co‑op reviews
Working knowledge of loan documentation requirements
Working knowledge of the Title review process
Experience with various mortgage products and loan programs
Experience working with numerous originators and lenders a plus
Experience with Conventional, Non‑conventional, FHA, VA, and business purpose loans
Experience with quality control auditing is a plus
Having worked as an underwriter or contract underwriter
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Products including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
Strong organizational and time management skills
High attention to detail required
Ability to professionally manage confidential information
Skilled in reading AUS Engine reports such as DU or LPA
Ability to identify the strong points of a well‑articulated underwriting guidelines and Matrices
Experience with document imaging and workflow systems
