We're hiring a Public Benefits Specialist Supervisor in Tacoma, WA. Home and Community Services, as a division of Home and Community Living Administration (HCLA) promotes, plans, develops, and provides an array of long‑term services and supports to persons aged eighteen and older with disabilities, seniors, and caregivers. These services and supports are intended to maximize the independence, dignity, and quality of life of these individuals.
The Public Benefits Specialist 5 supervises a unit of Public Benefits Specialists who determine eligibility for financial, medical, food, and long‑term service and support programs. This is an opportunity to contribute to regional policy designs and gain management experience.
Please note:
Flexible hybrid work schedule is based on business needs. Pierce County employees are eligible to receive an Orca Card for transportation needs.
Some Of What You’ll Do
Evaluate ongoing employee performance
Identify, resolve, document, and implement personnel issues
Manage leave and attendance for staff
Establish unit workloads and quality standards and ensure equitable work distribution within the unit
Control the overall workflow of work processed by the unit
Review activity reports
Determine individual and unit training needs
Input and receive data using multiple automated systems
Collaborate with internal and external partners
Develop hiring strategies
What We’re Looking For
Ability to communicate and maintain working relationships with a wide range of staff
Excellent listening skills
Critical thinking skills
Ability to make professional judgments
Ability to remain calm and demonstrate patience
Who should apply? One year of experience as a Public Benefits Specialist 3 or 4.
OR
Bachelor’s degree and three years of experience examining/processing medical insurance or rehabilitation claims, unemployment insurance claims, or a job providing staff support in public assistance eligibility determination, or in a job analyzing, verifying, and evaluating financial data and information.
Three years of out‑of‑state experience, conducting financial eligibility determination for public assistance to include financial, medical and food benefit programs will be considered toward experience.
Note: Related or closely related employment experience may substitute year for year for education.
