The Residence Hall Director (RHD) is a full‑time, 10‑month, live‑in general staff member responsible for the daily operations of a residence hall or on‑campus apartment. The Housing and Residence Life Office is committed to providing residents a comfortable, educational, diverse, and caring community where academic success, personal growth, and social responsibility are valued.
A live‑in position requires the RHD to reside in an on‑campus apartment. The department provides an apartment and meal plan to enable the RHD to be visible in the community, attend meetings, and respond to emergencies.
Qualifications
High School Diploma
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience working with high school or college students
Previous work experience in Housing and Residence Life
Good verbal communication, organizational, and time‑management skills
Roles, Duties, and Responsibilities The Residence Hall Director cultivates a sense of belonging through student engagement and success initiatives. The RHD reports to the Director of Housing and Residence Life and collaborates with staff to enhance the student experience in the assigned residential community.
Administrative Duties
Display initiative and leadership in administering managerial duties and responsibilities relevant to the position
Serve as the immediate supervisor for designated Resident Assistants and Information Assistants
Prepare the assigned residence hall for all residents to move in prior to the fall and spring semesters
Maintain accurate and confidential records for every student in the residence hall
Maintain accurate records for every assigned bed in the residence hall
Perform computer duties such as completing reports, reviewing Campus ID card access, and reviewing cameras to bookmark events and report violations
Lock and/or unlock and secure the assigned residence hall at specified times
Conduct announced and unannounced room inspections
Submit maintenance reports after weekly inspections
Address any violations of the Code of Student Conduct by documenting the situation and referring the student to the Director of Housing and Residence Life or District Dean of Student Services through a Campus Appearance Ticket and Incident Report
Properly check out each residence hall student and submit accurate paperwork based on each check‑out with documented charges
Leadership and Advocate for Student Success
Partner in students’ total development by working with Advising and Retention Center, Student Counseling, Testing and Disability Support Services, Student Activities, and other offices as needed
Facilitate leadership opportunities and support all students in leadership development, specifically leadership events sponsored by Residence Life
Contribute to the development and facilitation of the residential curriculum
Contribute to recruitment and retention programs and initiatives
Student Conduct and Crisis Management
Assist in emergencies and severe weather with the assigned residence hall
Maintain an accurate list of all residents to use in case of fire, tornado, or other emergencies requiring student evacuation
Communicate any student concerns regarding mental health and Title IX issues to the appropriate administrators
Follow procedures as outlined in the NWCC Emergency Response Plan
Physical Abilities and Work Environment
Communicate professionally both orally and in written form
Climb stairs to reach the highest floor of the assigned residence hall multiple times throughout the day
Walk inside and outside in wind, rain, snow, and other weather conditions; access all residence hall rooms
Lift mattresses and chairs to inspect for damage and place them appropriately in rooms
Bend at the waist and/or knees to open drawers, look under beds, etc.
Move arms above head to open closet doors, drawers of chests, and desks, and to reach shelves
Sit to view cameras, perform computer work, greet residents, and complete paperwork
Type, write, file, and perform other clerical duties
Speak to students, guests, and college officials regarding policies and processes for on‑campus residents, including respectful confrontation
View a computer screen for 15–30 minutes at a time
Reside primarily in provided housing accommodations while residents are on campus
Work two evening shifts during the week and select weekends as scheduled and as needed for emergencies; weekend availability is a limited requirement within the RHD role
Other duties as assigned by the Director of Housing and Residence Life and District Dean of Student Services
