Commissioning Associate - Mission Critical Facilities

Stantec’s Buildings team designs and delivers high-performance building projects. We seek a Commissioning Associate to join our Commissioning Team within the Buildings Engineering Practice. The position may require travel to project locations throughout the USA. Remote work strategies may be considered based on project requirements and supervisor approval. This role is open to any location with a Stantec office presence for the right candidate.

Your Opportunity

We provide high-performance commissioning oversight across a range of projects, from small-scale commercial fit-outs to large state and private sector programs. You will join a collaborative team that focuses on safety, performance, and sustainability while delivering commissioning services for clients.

Your Key Responsibilities

Managing and delivering Commissioning Services for valued clients and their projects across Texas, the Southwest and Gulf Regions.

Develop Cx plans and specifications.

Attend Cx pre-proposal meetings, Cx kick-off meetings, and additional meetings as required for designated Cx projects.

Execute and manage commissioning assignments with in-office and on-site activities.

Monitor Cx activities to ensure timely and efficient completion and compliance with project contract Cx requirements.

Develop and maintain documentation of Cx projects and milestone events; provide timely management information reports and review project schedules for commissioning events.

Receive and review project as-built drawings, O&M manuals, warranty manuals, and commissioning reports.

Analyze contracts, review plans/drawings/submittals, verify commissioning schedules, identify deficiencies and out-of-scope work, and initiate actions with the project manager.

Maintain schedules and allocate resources to commissioning tasks; audit sites during commissioning to ensure scope, quality, and schedules are met.

Support and participate in coordination and implementation of commissioning and performance testing processes and document findings.

Review design drawings and report to Clients on whether they satisfy the Owner’s project requirements.

Support the Commissioning team with field reviews, testing, issue capture and resolution of mechanical, electrical and automation-related services.

Prepare and develop detailed reports and support documentation; witness and document air and water balancing procedures and balancing results.

Witness and document automation controls verifications and sensor calibrations.

Assist in generating Functional Performance test scripts and facilitate functional performance testing of mechanical, electrical, and life safety systems.

Collaborate with the Texas, Southwest and Gulf Regions Commissioning Team and the broader North American Commissioning Team to develop and implement programs and procedures.

Lead business development opportunities with integrated architecture and engineering teams and external partners.

Develop commissioning (Cx) scopes of services and Cx cost estimates.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in a building design-related discipline (e.g., Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, Building Science) or 10-15 years of experience in building controls, HVAC, BAS, Electrical, or related field.

Experience with AutoCAD/Revit/Bluebeam and reading/interpreting architectural and engineering drawings.

Basic knowledge of mechanical systems architecture, construction and components.

Some energy modeling experience (eQuest, EnergyPlus, Carrier HAP, Trane Trace, IES-VE).

Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote).

Preferred qualifications: CEM or EMIT, LEED Accredited Professional, 10-15 years of hands-on commissioning experience, ability to pursue National Certification in Commissioning within a year if qualified, and knowledge of HVAC and building systems for evaluation and testing.

Excellent written and oral communications skills; ability to read and interpret drawings independently.

1-3+ years of energy modeling experience (as above).

Professional Engineer or Registered Architect qualifications are a plus.

Duties include execution of standard building commissioning processes per ASHRAE Guidelines 0 and 202, understanding IECC/LEED/Title 24, engineering design reviews, ASHRAE Level 1-3 energy audits, and support for certifications (CxA, CCP, BEMP, WELL, LEED, Energy Star, CEM).

Knowledge of commissioning across mechanical, plumbing, electrical distribution, lighting, and specialty systems including fire alarm, security, nurse call, and renewable energy systems.
