Varo Bank, the first all-digital national bank, is seeking a passionate, data-driven Credit Risk Director to provide risk management oversight and effective challenge of credit related activities as we grow our lending business. You will collaborate across a number of teams internally; including risk management, product, lending, finance, engineering and legal to ensure Varo Bank’s risk management is best in class. We are looking for an analytic thinker who thrives in a fast-paced, mission-oriented environment to help revolutionize consumer banking.

What You'll Do:

Work in our 2nd line of defense credit risk management team

Independently evaluate and challenge credit strategies, by understanding the impact of any change on profitability through advanced credit analytics

Review the usage of advanced machine learning models developed by data scientists in credit decisions, in order to ensure profitable outcomes

Ensure credit extension decisions aligns with Varo’s Risk Appetite Framework

Manage Credit Key Risk Indicators; perform analysis to enhance and evolve credit KRIs, ensuring metrics align with Varo’s Business Objectives and Risk Appetite

Build and maintain monitoring dashboards; Perform portfolio analysis and generate actionable insights

Spot emerging credit risk by developing and maintaining credit monitoring reports with a view on internal and external leading indicators and share analytic insights with key stakeholders

Evaluate new alternative data and determine how best to utilize them

Manage credit-related policies and ensure they are properly being applied in our lending products

You’ll bring the following required skills and experiences:

6+ years of experience in consumer credit risk management or credit strategy, preferably at a fintech or major financial institution

Deep understanding of the consumer credit lifecycle and how Credit Risk Management principles are applied in consumer lending

Advanced expertise in data analysis and manipulation using SQL or Python

Experience with advanced statistical techniques and a solid understanding of relational databases

Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong attention to detail

Experience in using models (developed by data scientists) to improve business decisions

Strong ability to independently identify and solve problems in a fast-paced environment

Education: Bachelor's or Master's in a quantitative field like Computer Science, Economics, Math, Statistics, or Engineering

Familiarity with business intelligence tools like Tableau or similar

Experience with machine learning models in a credit risk context is a plus

Experience at a high-growth fintech or tech startup is a plus

For cash compensation, we set standard ranges for all US-based roles based on function, level, and geographic location, benchmarked against similar-stage growth companies. Per applicable law, the salary range for this role is $140,000 - $190,000. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors as well as candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the identified range.

This role is also eligible for a bonus, equity, and competitive benefits.
