Maintenance Mechanic III – HVAC Technician Fairbanks North Star Borough School District

Responsible for performing skilled trade duties in the maintenance and repair of district buildings, furnishings, and equipment, with an emphasis on HVAC, refrigeration, and controls.

Key Responsibilities

Maintain, repair, and install refrigeration and air conditioning systems and equipment.

Inspect HVAC systems for proper performance; replace worn parts and calibrate controls at regular intervals.

Repair and replace duct work, dampers, control valves, and associated components.

Maintain HVAC preventative maintenance program and update documentation.

Maintain and repair boilers, furnaces, and burners.

Manage inventory of supplies and equipment; initiate requisitions and maintain records.

Oversee contracted services and repair work on Borough owned or leased facilities.

Assist Division managers in reviewing design, submittals, and inspection of facility construction projects.

Enter maintenance/system data into computer systems.

Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Three years of technical/apprentice training in HVAC and four years of journeyman-level experience or seven years of responsible maintenance experience in similar facilities.

At least three years of experience installing, troubleshooting, repairing, and programming digital controls (DDC). Manufacturer training preferred.

Knowledge of diagnostic testing of controls systems, boiler systems, refrigeration systems, and electrical systems; experience performing major repairs; proficiency with standard and specialized tools.

Universal Technician Certification for refrigerant practices.

Availability during off‑hours.

Valid driver’s license and acceptable insurance under Borough program; proof of automobile insurance if personal vehicle used for Borough business.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Perform tasks independently and comprehend equipment drawings, manuals, diagrams, and blueprints.

Understand and execute written and oral instructions and work effectively with co‑workers and supervisors.

Accurately complete written documentation of work performed and use electronic work order system.

Wearing a respirator and passing a physical.

Other Requirements

Proficiency test may be administered.

Criminal background check required.
