Plains Midstream Canada seeks an Electrical & Instrumentation Technician I-III to support our assets through installation, calibration, maintenance, and repair of electrical and instrumentation equipment.

Work Location: Field (tank farms, pump stations, control centers, and office locations) across Canada and the United States.

Responsibilities

Executes tasks with moderate guidance, working independently on routine maintenance and projects.

Schedules and performs inspections and maintenance of electrical equipment at substations, pump stations, valve & manifold sites, and other facilities.

Maintains equipment per the maintenance control system—creating service requests, sourcing parts, completing work orders, and keeping service records.

Conducts preventive maintenance on DC/AC motors, batteries, rectifiers, inverters, and other equipment using vendor manuals and applicable codes.

Performs lockout/tagout on company facilities and ensures safe operation of transmitters, safety devices, switchgear, substation equipment, and tank gauging equipment.

Tests and maintains low‑voltage distribution panels and electrical control devices.

Repairs electrical or SCADA systems as required by the Pipeline Control Center or Operations.

Installs SCADA equipment, DCS, HMI, PLCs, and electronic metering devices such as flow computers and meters.

Installs conduit and wiring per engineered drawings and repairs AC/DC equipment including emergency battery backup systems.

Assists senior personnel with line location, gauging, proving, and meter ticketing.

Participates in construction, development, turnaround, and commissioning projects at terminals and pipelines.

Performs routine operations and maintenance functions across stations, terminals, mainlines, and gathering systems.

Completes regulatory paperwork, safety permits, near‑miss reports, and incident reports.

Communicates problem areas and recommendations to appropriate levels, ensuring safety, regulatory, and operational integrity.

Responds to breakdowns and emergency equipment failures, performs minor purchases, tracks costs, and maintains inventory stock levels.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Required

High school diploma or equivalent.

Technical degree, apprenticeship, or two years of field experience preferred.

Proficiency reading electrical drawings, pipeline maps, schematics, and technical manuals; ability to perform load studies and calculations.

Knowledge of electrical code requirements, federal, state, and provincial regulations for pipeline operations.

Familiarity with electrical theory, wiring, conduit installation, and HVAC/instrumentation training helpful.

Experience with high‑voltage electrical systems, substation and switchgear work.

Training in protective devices (relays, breakers, motors, RTDs, transmitters, vibration sensors).

Proficiency installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing industrial electrical systems.

Basic AC/DC voltage, capacitance, and amperage measurement skills.

Experience with PLCs, flow computers, UPS inverters, and backup battery maintenance.

Ability to troubleshoot and repair motor starters, capacitors, tank gauges, transmitters, relay‑controlled devices, and control systems.

Proficient with safe work practices such as PPE use, fire extinguisher inspection, eyewash stations, stop work authority, and safety data sheets.

Understanding of pipeline and facility operations and controls, and basic knowledge of related pipelines and facilities.

Competent in line locating and basic crossings.

Knowledge of pipeline measurement balances and standards.

Basic computer skills: Excel, Word, Office.

Familiarity with PHMSA and OSHA regulations.

Outstanding safety record.

Completion of Haz‑Mat training, DOT operator qualifications for pipeline mechanical operations, and mandatory safety training.

Ability to work in physical, outdoor conditions with heat, cold, and proximity to high voltage or chemicals.

Legally authorized to work in Canada or the United States.

Qualifications

Valid driver’s license with a clean abstract in the relevant province.

Cleared criminal history background check and satisfactory reference checks.
