About The Position The Office of the Sheriff is seeking qualified candidates to fill multiple permanent, full‑time entry‑level positions of
Deputy Sheriff Private . Prior experience is not required; however, applicants who are current students or recent graduates of an approved Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC) accredited institution are also encouraged to apply.
Applicants will be considered for the
Fall 2025 Academy Class . Candidates with at least one year of prior law‑enforcement experience in Maryland and current MPCTC certification should apply under the Experienced Deputy Sheriff announcement.
Example of Work
Provide effective and efficient law enforcement services to the residents of Prince George’s County.
Perform general law enforcement and investigations, including serving warrants and extraditing persons wanted on criminal warrants.
Transport prisoners to and from institutions and courts throughout the State of Maryland and the United States.
Arrest, detain, and process prisoners under the custody of the Office of the Sheriff.
Serve civil processes and summons.
Execute writs and court orders.
Maintain security in courtrooms of the Circuit and District Courts.
Monitor prisoners in holding areas.
Perform court‑related eviction work.
Minimum Qualifications
U.S. Citizen
High School diploma, graduate, or possess a G.E.D.
At least 20 years and 6 months of age at the time of application (21+ years at time of Academy graduation).
Valid driver’s license with at least 6 months of post‑license driving experience.
Pass all qualification factors listed in the Additional Information.
Successfully complete a written test, agility test, oral examination, and shift work.
Successfully pass a background investigation.
Preferred Qualifications
60+ college credit hours.
Current student or recent graduate of an MPCTC‑accredited institution with certification.

Schedule and pass an Applicant Physical Requirement Test (APRT).
Pass the written examination.
Submit preliminary documents and records check.
Download and complete the Personal History Statement (PHS).
Phase 3 :

Oral board interview.
Polygraph examination.
Psychological screening.
Medical examination & drug screening.
Hiring consideration.
Final offer of employment.
Completion and graduation from the Prince George's County Police Academy.
Conditions of Employment

Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment for assigned duties.
Successfully pass pre‑employment checks, which may include reference checks, background investigations, and drug screenings.
