We are seeking an experienced upstream oil & gas corporate controller to join our team at our headquarters in Denver, CO, reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer. This role will serve as a key leader in financial reporting, audits, taxes, and cash flow management—preferably with a background in non-operated oil & gas upstream interests. The Controller will oversee the accounting team to ensure integrity, transparency, and insight in all financial matters. The ideal candidate will also champion efficiency by streamlining processes, automating manual tasks, and implementing new tools and systems that reduce bottlenecks and enhance accuracy. This individual will be an innovative, collaborative leader who embraces change and helps prepare the organization for future growth. Key Responsibilities
Lead the month-end and quarter-end close process, including oversight of journal entries, account reconciliations, variance analysis, and adjusting entries Prepare, review, and present quarterly and annual financial statements (GAAP or other relevant basis) to executive leadership. Submit required financial statements and compliance schedules/documents to lenders, banks, and other stakeholders on quarterly and annual timelines. Analyze financial performance vs. budget/forecast; provide commentary, trend analysis, and actionable insights for senior management. Assist with ad hoc financial analyses, modeling, business cases, due diligence, M&A support, or joint ventures, as needed. Upstream Oil & Gas Accounting (non-operated)
Oversee core upstream accounting for non-operated interests: JIB, revenue & royalty accounting, owner statements, and partner settlements. Audit & Compliance
Oversee rigorous documentation of processes to ensure SOX compliance standards are embedded in all financial reporting processes and internal controls. Plan and coordinate the annual audit process, including audit kickoff, schedules, supporting work papers, interim and year-end fieldwork, and adjustments. Serve as primary liaison with external auditors; ensure timely delivery of G/L, TB, supporting documentation, and responses to audit queries. Tax & Investor Reporting
Prepare and deliver annual tax workbooks to the external tax council. Oversee CPA’s adjustments and validate tax calculations. Budgeting, Forecasting & Cash Flow
Assist the Executive Leadership Team in preparing the annual G&A (General & Administrative) budget Develop KPIs to track budget vs. actual to identify variances throughout the year Oversee treasury functions — produce rolling cash flow forecasts, stress tests, distributions, and scenario analysis. Accounting Operations & Team Leadership
Collaborate with senior leadership to ensure the accounting department strategy aligns with the overall corporate strategy Oversee the accounting team, conducting weekly 1:1s, team meetings, providing regular feedback, and semiannual performance reviews. Mentor and develop staff; delegate appropriately and maintain oversight of key deliverables. Foster strong internal communication, interdepartmental collaboration, and accountability. Continually identify opportunities to streamline and automate accounting processes, championing process improvement and technology adoption to modernize the accounting function to support scalable growth. Qualifications/Skills
A bachelor’s degree in accounting or a similar field is mandatory. CPA certification and/or a master’s degree in accounting or a similar field is preferred. 8+ years of accounting experience with at least 3 years in a leadership role Required hands‑on experience with upstream oil & gas accounting (JIB, revenue rules, cost audits). Demonstrated audit experience is highly preferred Knowledge of tax implications impacting oil & gas operations is preferred. Advanced Excel skills Mandatory experience using OGsys software or similar oil & gas accounting software Experience with Spotfire, Power BI, and EnergyLink is preferred Strong analytical mindset with the ability to interpret complex financials and present to senior leadership Proven ability to manage and mentor a team and ensure continued growth in skills and responsibilities Proven track record of implementing process improvements and leveraging technology to drive efficiency A collaborative and innovative mindset is critical Open to change and adaptable to growth Excellent written and verbal communication skills Highly organized with a strong attention to detail Must reside within commuting distance to Denver, CO, or be willing to relocate permanently Compensation and Benefits
This position offers an attractive compensation and benefits package. The base annual salary range for this role is $150,000 to $180,000, depending on experience, along with a strong annual bonus structure. This role starts as soon as possible. The total cash compensation includes base salary, employer-paid benefits for Medical, Dental, Life, and Vision, including an employer-paid HSA, as well as participation in an annual bonus program. This position also offers participation in our equity program after the first year. Compensation packages are determined based on individual skills, experience, qualifications, and other job-related factors.
