American Sign Language Interpreter Reports to:
Director of Student Programs Supervises:
None Qualifications:
Completed an interpreter training program.
Obtained a Bachelor’s degree, or
Worked three or more years in an area related to the field of deaf education, which could include interpreting in non-educational settings, and
In addition to the above requirements, an educational interpreter must also maintain one of the following:
Certification by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), or
National Association for the Deaf (NAD) Level IV or better, or
Quality Assurance Screening Test (QAST) Level III or better, or
Signed Exact English Level 3.5 or better, or
Educational Interpreters Proficiency Assessment (EIPA) Level 3.5 or better in the area for which they are certified (elementary or secondary)
Satisfy all district requirements with regards to physical health and citizenship.
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
Position Goal Assist in the implementation of the program designed to meet the specific goals and objectives for student(s) with a hearing impairment, through the provision of individual attention, communication via sign language, additional and/or enrichment instruction.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities Interpret all interactions, activities, materials, and assessments, abiding by state/federal guidelines, the RID/NAD Code of Professional Conduct, and the NAIE Educational Interpreter Code of Ethics.
Collaborate and participate in development and implementation of assigned student(s) IEP or 504 as a related service provider in accordance with state/federal guidelines.
Collaborate with teachers and staff regarding accessibility of school curriculum, activities, and environment.
Maintain interpreter observations and applicable student records.
Prepare for interpreting by reviewing course materials and doing research as needed.
Participate in ongoing training as is applicable.
Perform all other duties as assigned.
Employment Terms Employment is for a period of Nine (9) months classified as an hourly contract. The position is classified under FLSA Non-Exempt. The evaluation is classified and evaluated by Jenks Public Schools.
Physical Demands
Stand for extended periods; sit for extended periods; twist at the neck and trunk; bend at the waist; stoop, kneel, crouch; lift/move up to 20 pounds; handle objects and tools with hands; repetitive use of fingers and hands.
Occasional: Reach with hands and arms overhead, above shoulder and horizontally; lift/move up to 40 pounds.
Visual: Close, color, peripheral, depth perception, ability to adjust focus.
Hearing/Speaking: Adequate to exchange information.
