General Accountability
Responsible for safely operating steel fabricating machinery and hand held tools in accordance with the site's business goals and objectives.
Primary Responsibilities
• Verify conformance of materials to specifications, using squares, rulers, and measuring tapes.
• Align and fit materials according to specifications, using overhead cranes, pry bars, and hammers.
• Move parts into position, manually or with overhead cranes.
• Position, align, fit, and weld materials to form complete units or subunits, following blueprints and layout specifications, and using jigs, welding torches, and hand tools.
• Study engineering drawings and blueprints to determine material requirements and task sequences.
• Set up and operate fabricating machines, such as brakes, rolls, shears, flame cutters, or grinders to bend, cut, or otherwise form and assemble metal components.
• Lay out and examine materials to be processed to ensure that specifications are met.
• Tack-weld fitted parts together.
• Lift or move materials and finished products, using large overhead cranes.
• Remove high spots and cut bevels, using hand files, portable grinders, and cutting torches.
• Position or tighten braces, jacks, clamps, ropes, bolt straps, or bolt parts in position for welding or riveting.
• Locate and mark material bending and cutting lines, allowing for stock thickness, machine and welding shrinkage, and other component specifications.
• Erect ladders and scaffolding to fit together large assemblies.
• Design and construct templates and fixtures, using hand tools.
• Hammer, chip, and grind workpieces to cut, bend, and straighten metal.
• Straighten warped or bent parts using hand torches or straightening presses.
• Smooth material edges and fix taps, tubes, and valves.
• Preheat material to make them malleable, using hand torches or furnaces.
• Heat-treat parts, using acetylene torches.
• Install containers and other structures.
• Direct activities of assigned fitter helper

• Smooth metal surfaces or edges.
• Cut industrial materials in preparation for fabrication or processing.
• Review blueprints or other instructions to determine operational methods or sequences.
• Adjust equipment controls to regulate gas flow.
• Clean material or finished products.
• Mark material with identifying information.
• Operate welding equipment.
• Operate grinding equipment.
• Operate metal forming equipment.
• Notify others of equipment repair or maintenance needs.
• Heat material to prepare for or complete production.
• Lay out materials to prepare for assembly.
• Fill cracks, imperfections, or holes in materials.
• Assemble temporary structures.
• Assemble metal structures.
• Reshape materials to established specifications.
• General housekeeping of work area(s).
• Operate overhead cranes to move material, equipment, and parts.
• Use fire suppression methods in industrial emergencies.
• Requires working in varying climate changes (hot/cold).
Education and Training
• Requires training in vocational schools, related on-the-job experience, or an associate's degree.
• Previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is preferred for these occupations.
• One or two years of training involving both on-the-job experience and informal training with experienced workers.
• Proficient communication and or organizational skills to coordinate, supervise, manage, or train others to accomplish goals.

• Must be highly motivated and able to work independently or within a team.
• Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds consistently with heavier weight necessary at times.
• Must be able to spend most of the workday standing and walking.
