About the Position
The Senior Manager, Communications plays a key role in advancing NACo’s mission by developing and executing strategic, high‑impact communications that strengthen engagement with county leaders and promote NACo’s priorities. This position helps craft compelling narratives that elevate county government, support NACo’s advocacy and membership goals, and enhance NACo’s presence across traditional and digital channels.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and implement innovative communications strategies to engage NACo members, policymakers, and stakeholders.
Support the creation of a coordinated communications plan that aligns with NACo’s priorities and member engagement goals.
Craft messaging, scripts, talking points, op‑eds, speeches and presentations for NACo leadership and programs.
Develop impactful content for NACo.org, email, newsletters, and social media channels.
Build and maintain strong relationships with key Capitol Hill, national, regional and local media outlets covering county and intergovernmental issues.
Draft and distribute press releases, media advisories and statements.
Proactively pitch stories and secure media coverage highlighting county innovations, NACo’s leadership and advocacy priorities.
Prepare NACo leaders and members for interviews, press events and public appearances.
Monitor and analyze media coverage of NACo and county governments to identify opportunities and mitigate risks.
Partner with Membership, Government Affairs and other key teams to design and coordinate member‑facing communications that strengthen engagement across all touchpoints including digital, print, events and email.
Collaborate with internal teams to promote NACo events, programs and resources effectively to members and partners.
Ensure that content is optimized for each medium and digital platform to maximize reach, engagement and clarity.
Apply data‑driven insights to continually refine communications strategies and improve member experience.
Lead digital content planning and syndication to ensure consistency and impact across NACo’s channels.
Partner with membership, Government Affairs, digital and creative teams to align visual and written content.
Identify and implement best practices in digital storytelling, audience targeting, and performance analytics.
Work closely with NACo’s leadership, policy, membership, and events teams to align messaging and maximize impact.
Contribute to integrated campaigns that support NACo’s advocacy, membership growth, and thought leadership.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, or a related field.
Minimum of 8‑10 years of experience in strategic communications, media relations, or digital communications, within agency, media, association, government, or public policy setting.
Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills; ability to tailor messages for diverse audiences.
Demonstrated experience crafting press releases, speeches, and multi‑channel content.
Strong understanding of digital platforms, trends, and analytics, with ability to optimize content for performance.
Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work collaboratively across teams.
Familiarity with AP Style and experience with content management and email marketing systems.
Knowledge of intergovernmental relations and experience working with elected officials a plus.
Commitment to excellence, creativity, and accountability.
Location and Travel This position is eligible for remote and/or hybrid work, with travel for NACo conferences, meetings, and partner engagements.
Salary Range $100,000 to $120,000
