Open Position : Senior Systems Engineer

Income Research & Management seeks an individual with solid system administration skills in server, storage and network. This individual will join the Infrastructure and Cybersecurity team and assist in the ongoing design, expansion and maintenance of our on-prem and Azure cloud infrastructure.

An ideal candidate will have strong technical skills, especially in physical and virtual server management, storage and network optimization, capacity planning, Active Directory management, and overall infrastructure maintenance. S/he is expected to work well in a collaborative environment and show attention to detail. This is a hands-on role. A successful candidate must be able to think on their feet and demonstrate an ability to solve unique problems in stressful situations.

Location:

Boston, MA (Hybrid 2 days in office, with occasional travel to Lowell, MA)

Responsibilities:

Server & Virtualization Management

Manage, maintain, and optimize Windows Server environments. Design, implement, and administer Hyper-V failover clusters for high availability and performance. Deploy and manage Microsoft SQL Server failover clusters, ensuring resilience and recoverability. Storage & Backup Systems

Administer enterprise storage platforms, including Pure Storage arrays and Exagrid backup targets. Manage iSCSI storage networks and ensure efficient, reliable connectivity across clustered environments. Oversee Veeam backup and recovery solutions, including testing, monitoring, and documentation of DR processes. Security & Compliance

Apply operating system and application patch management across production and disaster recovery environments. Enforce security best practices, access controls, and compliance requirements. Participate in disaster recovery planning, testing, and incident response. Infrastructure & Cloud Integration

Contribute to the design and support of hybrid infrastructure (on-prem + Azure). Collaborate on projects involving infrastructure-as-code (e.g., Terraform) where applicable. Assist in capacity planning, monitoring, and performance optimization. Collaboration & Support

Serve as a senior escalation point for complex technical issues. Mentor junior engineers and share knowledge with the team. Create and maintain technical documentation, runbooks, and standards. Participate in on-call rotation for 24x7 support, upgrades, and project work.

Required Skills and Experience:

7+ years of IT infrastructure experience, with at least 5 years focused on:

Windows Server administration in enterprise environments. Hyper-V virtualization and cluster management. Microsoft SQL Server clustering and database infrastructure support. Veeam Backup & Replication in production environments. Enterprise storage administration (Pure Storage, Exagrid, Reduxio, or similar). iSCSI and SAN management, including performance troubleshooting. Patch management, system hardening, and compliance practices. Advanced troubleshooting across the server, storage, and network stack.

Solid understanding of:

Active Directory domains, forests, and Group Policy management. Networking fundamentals (LAN, WAN, VLANs, firewalls, routing). Hybrid environments with cloud extensions (Azure preferred). Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience). Experience with infrastructure-as-code and automation (Terraform, PowerShell). Familiarity with monitoring tools (e.g., SCOM, SolarWinds, Datto RMM or similar). Proven ability to operate effectively in high-pressure, fast-paced environments.

In addition to the opportunity to participate in a discretionary bonus program, the salary range below describes the estimated minimum to maximum base salary range for a position of this level. Compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each candidate and may vary based upon but not limited to relevant experience, licensure requirements, certifications, skill set, and other business and organizational needs.

Base Salary Range: $130,000-$150,000
