MHI Ship Repair & Services is a major marine repair and conversion contractor serving the U.S. Navy, Military Sealift Command, Maritime Administration and Commercial ship owners and operators worldwide. Our shipyard is conveniently located in the Mid-Atlantic region at the port of Hampton Roads, Norfolk Virginia.

JOB SUMMARY:

Oversees MHI’s NDT program which includes but is not limited to establishing techniques and procedures, interpreting codes and technical references, and providing NDT methods. Responsible for training, testing and certifying MHI’s NDT inspectors including the administration and maintenance of the certification program. Revises and updates procedures to applicable standards.

SUPERVISES:

NDT Personnel in QA Department

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Administers and maintains NST qualification program for Level I, II and III NDT personnel. Maintain qualification records, certifications and proficiency examinations and oversight of required experience hours.

Performs QA audits on performance of welders, fitters and pipefitters assuring the use of proper procedures, materials, processes, and technical instructions.

Performs non-destructive inspections on all components as required by NAVSEA specifications, blueprints, and work procedure requirements to include NDT inspections for piping and structural fit-up and final weld inspections. This includes but is not limited to 5X visual, liquid penetrant, magnetic particle, and ultrasonic inspections as needed.

Attends production meetings as necessary to keep up to date on job progress and works with shop superintendents to resolve problems and possible negative workmanship trends.

Observe sub-contractor NDT inspections and reviews sub-contractor welding and NDT procedures for compliance prior to submission for MARMC.

Oversee the work of NDT inspectors and ensures quality assurance and safety procedures are met. Work with the QA Manager to ensure that NDT inspections are scheduled and assigned appropriately. Provide necessary OJT.

Records, organizes, and evaluates test results and generates NDT and QA inspection reports.

Maintains equipment and ensures calibration for tests to be performed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must meet or exceed the requirements of MHI’s written practice for non-destructive testing with supporting documentation.

Must qualify to the technical performance of MHI’s internal procedures to perform NDT inspections.

High School Diploma or Equivalent and two years related technical experience.

ASNT Certification but not required.

Knowledge of shipboard structures and systems required. Minimum of one year NDT experience in ship repair industry.

Proficient in blueprint reading/interpretation, and QA systems

Knowledge of welding process and documented Ultrasonic experience a plus.

Strong organizational skills.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook is a must.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to interact well with and mentor others.
