Position Title: School-Based Mental Health Professional Reports To: Director of Student Services / Project Director - Discovering the Genius Project Salary Range: Maximum $60,697.00 plus benefits
OBJECTIVE: The School-Based Mental Health Professional will provide targeted mental health services to support students in Orangeburg County School District (OCSD) who are assigned to alternative education in lieu of expulsion, students experiencing chronic absenteeism, and students who have been expelled. This role is critical in addressing social, emotional, and behavioral health needs that impact student engagement, academic success, and overall well-being.
ESSENTINAL DUTIES
Direct Student Support Provide individual and group counseling sessions to students with identified mental health needs. Deliver crisis intervention and ongoing support for students facing emotional, behavioral, or trauma-related challenges. Work directly with students in alternative education placements, expelled students, and those exhibiting patterns of chronic absenteeism. Collaboration and Consultation
Collaborate with teachers, administrators, mental health team members, and the Student Success Coordinator to integrate mental health support with mentoring and academic interventions. Serve as a member of school-based D.E.E.P. (Develop - Encourage - Empower - Personalize) Teams to support SEL and behavioral interventions. Provide consultation to staff on strategies to manage student behavior and support student wellness in the classroom. Family and Community Engagement
Engage families in the mental health process by offering guidance, resources, and referrals to external services when appropriate. Partner with community providers and agencies to ensure coordinated support for students. Program Development and Reporting
Maintain accurate documentation of student sessions, referrals, and progress. Track outcomes related to absenteeism reduction, disciplinary incidents, and student engagement. Contribute to data collection and evaluation for the Discovering the Genius Project to monitor effectiveness and inform adjustments. Qualifications
Education & Experience
Master's degree in counseling, social work, psychology, or a related mental health field required. Licensed or license-eligible as a School Counselor, School Psychologist, Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or equivalent in South Carolina. Experience providing direct counseling services to children or adolescents in school or clinical settings. Knowledge of trauma-informed practices, SEL, and behavioral intervention strategies. Skills & Competencies
Strong counseling, case management, and crisis intervention skills. Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with students, families, and staff. Commitment to confidentiality, cultural competence, and equitable student support. Work Environment
District-wide role serving students across alternative education settings and multiple schools. Flexible schedule with occasional evenings or weekends for family and community engagement activities.
