Systems and Network Administrator

Basic Job Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree

in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience). Certifications like

CompTIA Network+ ,

Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Fundamentals , or

RHCSA

(Red Hat Certified System Administrator). Core Technical Skills: Systems Administration (RHEL and Windows): RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux): Experience administering RHEL-based systems (e.g.,

RHEL 8/9 ,

Fedora ). Command-line proficiency in

Bash scripting

and using tools like

YUM/DNF

for package management. Configuration and management of

RHEL services

(e.g.,

Systemd ,

Apache ,

Nginx ,

PostgreSQL ,

MySQL ,

LDAP ). Knowledge of

SELinux ,

firewalld , and security management. Windows Server: Experience administering

Windows Server

environments (e.g.,

Windows Server 2022 ). Active Directory (AD) management, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, and IIS (Internet Information Services). Familiarity with

PowerShell

scripting for automation. Experience with

Windows file systems , backups, and restoration. Networking: Understanding of

IP addressing ,

subnetting ,

VLANs ,

VRFs ,

routing , and

switching . Configuration of

network devices

like routers, switches, firewalls, and VPNs. Experience with

TCP/IP ,

DNS ,

DHCP , and

NTP

protocols. Basic knowledge of network monitoring tools (e.g.,

ping ,

traceroute ,

netstat ,

Wireshark ). Experience configuring network interfaces, firewalls, and routing tables on both RHEL and Windows environments. Virtualization and Infrastructure: Experience with

virtualization technologies

(e.g.,

VMware vSphere ,

Hyper-V ,

or KVM ). Familiarity with containerization technologies like

Docker

and

Kubernetes

for Linux-based environments. Storage: Experience with XFS

Network Attached Storage (NAS)

configuration and maintenance

(e.g. TrueNAS). Experience with administering a NAS in a Virtualized environment. Security Basics: Knowledge of basic network and system security practices (e.g.,

firewalls ,

VPNs ,

user authentication ). Familiarity with securing systems using

firewalld

(RHEL) or

Windows Firewall . Understanding of

user and group management

and access controls (e.g.,

LDAP ,

Kerberos ,

Active Directory ). Understanding of securing remote access using

SSH

for Linux and

RDP/WinRM

for Windows. Experience with PKI management. Problem-Solving Skills: Strong troubleshooting skills for both Linux and Windows environments, diagnosing network issues, hardware failures, and service outages. Ability to analyze and resolve connectivity issues in a multi-platform environment (Linux + Windows). Proven ability to identify the appropriate method and conduct testing to ensure complex technical solutions will work as expected in production. Automation & Scripting: Experience writing basic

Bash,

PowerShell or Python

scripts to automate routine tasks. Basic understanding of automation tools like

Ansible ,

Packer and Terraform . Soft Skills: Excellent communication skills for documenting network and system configurations, troubleshooting guides, and policies. Ability to collaborate effectively with different teams (Software Factory, Information Assurance, Development Teams, etc.). Ability to mentor junior system/network administrators and provide technical leadership. Ability to help manage tasks and priorities for a small team. Experience: 8-10 years of hands-on experience with system and network administration.

Advanced Systems Administration Skills: RHEL Advanced Skills: Advanced experience with

system performance tuning ,

service optimization , and

high availability setups . Expertise in configuring and managing

systemd

for service management and

LVM

(Logical Volume Management).. Familiarity with containerization technologies like

Kubernetes

for Linux-based environments. Windows Server Advanced Skills: Expertise in advanced

Active Directory

Group Policy Objects (GPO) ,

Domain Controllers ,

Forest/Domain functional levels , and

Trusts . Experience with Windows systems imaging, configuration management, and associated tooling (e,g , MDT, SCCM, Powershell DSC , etc). Kubernetes Administration Skills: Experience with deploying, administering, and maintaining Kubernetes clusters. Experience monitoring and troubleshooting Kubernetes clusters. Familiarity with centralized logging/monitoring tools (e.g.,

Prometheus ,

Grafana ,

ELK Stack ). Advanced PowerShell/Automation Tools: Advanced scripting skills with PowerShell,

Ansible , or

Terraform

for automating Windows and Linux system setups. Advanced Networking Knowledge: Network Architecture: Strong knowledge of designing and architecting

enterprise-level networks

(e.g.,

LAN ,

WAN ,

DMZ ,

VPN ). Expertise in configuring advanced routing protocols (e.g.,

OSPF ,

BGP ) and handling

Layer 3

networking. Hands-on experience with

VLANs ,

NAT ,

NTP , and

load balancing . Network Security: Expertise in securing network infrastructure with

firewalls ,

VPNs , and

IDS/IPS

systems. Experience implementing

multi-site VPNs ,

site-to-site

and

client-to-site VPNs . Advanced knowledge of

NACLs ,

ACLs ,

PKI , and

SSL/TLS

encryption. Familiarity with advanced network monitoring and diagnostic tools (e.g.,

Elastic Stack,

Wireshark ). Backup and Disaster Recovery: Experience with

backup solutions

like

Veeam

or native Linux/Windows backup tools. Knowledge of disaster recovery strategies for both RHEL and Windows systems (e.g.,

failover clusters ,

snapshots ,

replication ). Security & Compliance: Advanced knowledge of system and network security practices, including

SIEM

(Security Information and Event Management) tools,

IDS/IPS , and

firewall configurations . Familiarity with

endpoint security

tools (e.g.,

Antivirus ,

SIEM

integration) and

patch management . Certifications: Certified Network Administrator

(e.g.,

CompTIA Network+ ,

Cisco CCNA

or

CCNP ). Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE)

for advanced Linux system administration. CompTIA Security+

or other cybersecurity certifications.
