SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist in all areas of campus facilities with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Assist in different departments as assigned. May work with Grounds, Custodial, HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, Carpentry, Painting or Locksmith. May temporarily be assigned to a different shop depending upon the nature and scope of the assigned project. Maintenance Assistant & Locksmith may assist but not limited to the following:
Issue keys to employees and students in accordance with the University's Key Policy. Maintain key inventory both electronically and hard copies with signatures. Installs, repairs, rebuilds, and services mechanical or electrical locking devices, using hand tools and special equipment. Disassembles locks, such as padlocks, safe locks, and door locks, and repairs or replaces worn tumblers, springs, and other parts. Installs and repairs door hardware and hydraulic closing fixtures. Cuts new or duplicate keys and stamps with identification. Coordinate with Residence Life and Auxiliary Services for all academic year residence life key requests and summer camp/clinic key requests. Submit billing to Accounting & Business Services for all lost key billings. Coordinate with Campus Security to ensure the security of buildings is maintained at the highest levels.
Doors cannot be jerked open. Locking mechanisms are fully functional. Grand master keys, master keys and sub-master keys are accounted for.
Sweeps equipment and mechanical rooms and removes trash. Assist in maintaining shop inventory of supplies and materials Assist in maintaining records. Assist in maintaining assigned office space, workshop and vehicle to include but not limited to sweeping, organizing and general cleanliness. Ability to work in inclement weather, bend, climb, lift 100 pounds plus. Must be able to perform on call duties. Maintains the highest level of confidentiality concerning all matters in the Facilities Services Office. Does not discuss in any manner any information obtained through work in the office.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
Performs related work as directed by Supervisor assigned to. Must be able to work overtime, some evenings, nights and weekends. JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from a standard high school or equivalent is generally preferred. 1-3 years of experience in general maintenance, with specific training or experience in locksmithing. Knowledge of lock systems (e.g., pin tumbler, deadbolts, electronic locks) and tools like key cutters, lock picks, and rekeying kits. Familiarity with basic maintenance tasks (plumbing, electrical, carpentry) and hand/power tools. Ability to read blueprints or schematics for lock and building systems. Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Good communication and teamwork skills to coordinate with facility staff. Experience and education may be substituted for one another. Must have a valid Texas driver's license, related insurance and good driving record. ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
Skill in the use and adjustment of electrical and mechanical equipment. preferred. Ability to understand and follow instructions.
