Job Summary

Phlebotomist performs specimen collection, processing, and laboratory registration responsibilities under supervision of department supervisor, manager or director. The role supports the department in achieving service, quality, regulatory compliance and patient satisfaction.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate thorough understanding of specimen collection, testing requirements and rejection criteria.
  • Perform venipunctures, finger sticks on adult, pediatric, neonatal, geriatric patients and heel sticks on infants when required.
  • Utilize supplies appropriately and follow established procedures for patient identification and specimen collection.
  • Complete specimen collection documentation and educate patients and/or families regarding procedures.
  • Use computer information system for job functions and maintain clerical duties (fax, phone, pneumatic tube, reports).
  • Review Outstanding Specimen Report (OSR) and pending accessioning issues; take appropriate actions.
  • Receive laboratory specimens into information system and prepare specimens for courier pickup.
  • Label specimens, centrifuge, aliquot and discard according to established protocols.
  • Perform registration and order entry procedures accurately and timely.
  • Perform periodic preventive maintenance, quality assurance procedures and assess specimen needs for referral testing.
  • Communicate and troubleshoot problems with specimen collection or order entry in a timely manner.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years experience performing registration, clerical duties, and specimen processing in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Ability to interact with co‑workers in a team environment and provide excellent customer service.
  • Effective communication with all personnel to exchange accurate and timely technical information.
  • Familiarity with safety policies and procedures and the Privacy & Security Awareness program.
  • Availability to work during emergencies and disasters.

Education & Experience

  • Vocational/Technical degree preferred.
  • 1–3 years in a clinical laboratory setting preferred.

Certification

  • Phlebotomy, Medical Assistant, Paramedic or EMT certification preferred.
