Responsibilities
- Installs, tests, troubleshoots, and repairs a variety of air conditioning and refrigeration systems; maintains equipment of all types including absorption, centrifugal and compressor units.
- Performs required preventive maintenance on installed equipment.
- Inspects components to detect mechanical or electrical failures; changes filters, cleans units, and performs other maintenance.
- Disassembles related equipment to note condition and make necessary repairs or replacements.
- Checks electrical, electronic and pneumatic controls peculiar to HVAC equipment and makes necessary adjustments, repairs or replacements.
- Pumps down and charges units with appropriate refrigerants.
- Performs installation of equipment as outlined by engineer, using blueprints, sketches, specifications and manufacturer recommendations.
- Tests and balances air and chilled/hot water systems.
- Keeps records and makes reports of daily work, emergency/service calls investigated, service rendered, results of troubleshooting and general condition of equipment and systems.
- Reviews controls for proper operation and sequencing; recommends modifications to achieve optimum efficiency.
- Adheres to all University, Departmental, and OSHA safety policies, practices, and requirements.
- Performs other related duties of similar complexity, including the maintenance of tools.
Qualifications
- High school education and 4‑6 years of experience as a building heating, ventilating, cooling, and controls mechanic.
- Ability to read and write in English.
- EPA Refrigerant Certification required.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable.
