Duties & Responsibilities

Purpose of Position :

Performs complex activities of a higher professional level in the practice of occupational therapy, including patient evaluation and treatment, and program planning and implementation. Performs specialized activities to assist patients to restore or improve physical abilities, promote behavioral changes, adapt surroundings, and teach new skills. May be responsible for the supervision of staff occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants. Acts in compliance with applicable local, state, and federal rules and regulations and occupational therapy standards of care. All personnel perform related work.

Examples of Typical Tasks :

Under general supervision, with the widest latitude for the exercise of independent judgement, performs the following: 1. Manages clinical services in an occupational therapy unit. 2. Performs clinical supervision by observing the delivery of treatment, reviewing treatment plans and making recommendations to effectuate patient progress. 3. Assigns staff in accordance with patient needs and skill level of staff. 4. Clarifies, interprets and implements Physician's orders and consults with physicians to update orders and report on the progress of patients. 5. May be responsible for coordinating the development, implementation and evaluation of policies and procedures of an occupational therapy unit. Provides orientation to health care professionals regarding departmental policies, procedures and practices. 6. Evaluates staff performance and provides reports and guidance for improvement for the unit. 7. May coordinate activities in one or more clinical specialties such as pediatrics, geriatrics, psychiatry, computer technology, biofeedback, prosthetics, hands, sensory integration, neurodevelopmental training or other specialties. Trains staff in these disciplines. Conducts clinics based on advanced knowledge in the area(s) of specialization. 8. Coordinates student program. Maintains communication with schools and oversees student supervision. 9. Plans, develops and implements procedures, which facilitate communication and cooperation among therapy units and other health care setting units and departments. 10. Implements new therapy programs. Participates in the preparation of treatment protocols.

Minimum Qualifications

Assignment Level I 1. Valid license and current registration to practice as an Occupational Therapist issued by the New York State Education Department (NYSED); and

a. One (1) year of full-time professional experience in administering occupational therapy; or

b. Master's degree in Occupational Therapy may be substituted for one (1) year of experience, as described in "a" above.

Assignment Level II 1. In addition to meeting the qualification requirements for Assignment Level I, appointment to Assignment Level II requires one (1) additional year of experience, as described in "1" above.
