Job Title Director of Academic Advising

Summary

The Director of Academic Advising is a key leadership role at John Carroll University, significantly influencing the overall direction of student success efforts. This position partners closely with the Assistant Vice President for Student Success and the Director of the Center for Career Services to develop, manage, and assess a long-term strategy focused on improving institutional student outcomes, driving the University's "go national" campaign. A central focus is innovatively integrating academic advising with career education to boost retention and graduation rates, enhance post-graduate outcomes, and increase student enrollment. The role requires exceptional professionalism, creativity, collaboration, adaptability, and leadership skills to both accelerate the Academic Success team's performance and influence institutional stakeholders toward achieving university-wide success goals

Duties and Responsibilities Provide leadership and direction for undergraduate advising services at the university, collaborating closely with academic departments, faculty, assistant deans, and other stakeholders to ensure that advising is consistent, timely, and of high quality Lead and supervise the Academic Success Advisors to ensure that they are meeting individual, departmental, and divisional performance metrics Oversee academic advising caseloads and make adjustments as necessary Partner with the director of the Center for Career Services to forge strong, collaborative relationships between each other's teams and develop a shared sense of accountability for student success Outline and coordinate the course registration process for first-year students and transfer students, including advisor assignments and advising activities during New Student Orientation (NSO) Oversee the assessment of academic advising for undergraduate students across the institution, including analysis and sharing of relevant data in order to improve processes and outcomes Develop, implement and manage a training and development program for staff and faculty academic advisors Collaborate with other Student Success leaders to build, launch and maintain a central student success portal in Slate, which will serve as the primary platform for student advising and support; coordinate the training and onboarding of new users in advising roles Co-lead, along with the director of the Center for Career Services, the curriculum development and staffing of a revised academic/career success course for all first-year students Coordinate outreach efforts to students at key times (early alert, midterms), focusing on positivity and support Oversee the JCU Navigator program for first-year students including recruitment, training and execution Supervise and mentor department's graduate assistant Manage a personal caseload of advisees (smaller than most advisors); assist students with course scheduling, planning, prerequisites, academic requirements and class sequencing Serve as office lead on all academic policy matters and represent the office on committees such as the Academic Sanctions Committee, the Care Team and the University Committee on Academic Policies Other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications

Master's degree in a relevant academic/professional field Minimum of 8 years of successful advising and/or teaching experience in higher education in areas relevant to the job responsibilities Excellent oral and written communication skills, including ability to make effective public presentations Demonstrated excellence in leadership, organizational development, change management, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with a broad range of constituents (faculty, staff, alumni, students, and families) Intermediate proficiency in MS Word and Excel; Familiarity with Student Information System and Learning Management Systems, possibly Canvas. Familiarity with Google G-suite Ability to analyze, interpret, and connect data accurately and consistently Possess strategic planning skills and strong fiscal and budget management abilities Demonstrated leadership and supervisory capabilities Ability to apply independent judgment and decision-making skills to issues related to university policies and procedures Interest in understanding and supporting John Carroll's mission to inspire individuals to excel in learning, leadership, and service in the region and in the world Preferred Qualifications

Prior academic advising or student services leadership experience Experience with Ellucian's Banner product

Normal Work Location, Hours and Conditions

This position works in person from our campus in University Heights, Ohio. University core business hours are generally 8:30 am - 5:00 pm. However this position will require work to be performed outside of normal business hours based on department operations.

Physical Requirements

Ability to demonstrate the physical movements of the sport. Office functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other office locations and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

FLSA Exempt (Salary)

Compensation & Benefits

Starting salary will be $70,000 - $88,000, commensurate with qualifications.
