Position Purpose Under the direct supervision of the Executive Director of Operations and Personnel, performs a variety of tasks in connection with the maintenance and repair of public buildings and equipment; does related work as required.
Essential Job Functions
Performs semi-skilled masonry, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, welding, and painting work; Repairs and replaces windows, doors, floors, walls, roofing, and other parts of buildings; Installs and repairs general plumbing equipment including sinks, toilets, urinals, and hot water heaters; Does interior and exterior painting; Operates welder to repair and fabricate screens, frames, pipe, etc.; Checks heating plants to ensure proper operation; Performs chemical tests on boilers and adds chemicals to retard scale build-ups; Disassembles, inspects, and performs preventive maintenance on heating and air-conditioning equipment; Repairs and replaces locks; Operates automotive equipment incidental to work assignments; Uses a variety of hand and power tools; Assists in snow removal; Participates in general grounds maintenance activities; Additional Duties Performs other related tasks as assigned by supervisor. Equipment Uses hand tools of trade and related power equipment, including saws, drills, routers, planers, sanders, jointers, and stationary power equipment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of fundamental tools, materials, practices, maintenance, methods and procedures in the carpentry, plumbing, and electrical trades. Knowledge of building code conformance standards for carpentry, plumbing, electricity, electrical installation, and repair. Knowledge of occupational safety and health laws and regulations. Ability to follow oral or written work orders from supervisor, and to coordinate work with others. Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form. Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure. Ability to describe orally or in writing maintenance or repair problems as needed. Ability to troubleshoot, problem solve and resolve electrical or electricity issues. Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work. Travel Requirements Frequent travel between schools, or between schools and central offices, may be required.
Minimum Qualifications:
Per New York State Civil Service requirements for this non-competitive class: Graduation from high school, possession of a high school equivalency diploma or possession of an Individual Education Plan Diploma and one (1) year of experience in building construction, maintenance, or repair work in one or more of the standard building trades such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, masonry, etc.
New York State Education Department fingerprint clearance. Motor Vehicle Operator's license or ability to provide own transportation
