Engineering Manager, Messaging Platforms at The New York Times. The role leads the Messaging & Targeting Pipeline team, which powers personalized, timely communication to millions of readers across email, push notifications, and other channels. You will own the technical vision and execution of a critical data pipeline enabling sophisticated audience segmentation and message targeting. Collaborate with engineering, product, data, and marketing to build a scalable, reliable, and intelligent platform. Lead and Develop the Team: Manage a backend engineering team, coach and mentor team members, and foster collaboration, psychological safety, and engineering excellence. Drive Technical Strategy: Design, build, and maintain high-throughput, low-latency pipelines for message targeting, personalization, and delivery; guide architecture, technology selection, and operational practices. Execute and Deliver: Define roadmaps, plan sprints, and deliver projects aligned with broader company objectives. Ensure Operational Excellence: Ensure reliability, scalability, and performance of services with robust monitoring, alerting, and on-call practices to maintain high availability. Collaborate Across Boundaries: Coordinate with other teams and stakeholders; articulate technical challenges and risks clearly. Uphold the value of journalistic independence and commitment to The New York Times mission. Reporting line: This role reports to the Director of Engineering for Messaging Platforms. Basic Qualifications
2+ years in an engineering management or people leadership role 5+ years of hands-on software engineering experience with backend systems Proven technical leadership in delivering large-scale, complex software projects Experience hiring, developing, and retaining software engineers Familiarity with cloud-based infrastructure (e.g., GCP, AWS) Preferred Qualifications
Deep experience with event-driven architectures and distributed systems at scale Hands-on experience with data processing technologies (e.g., Kafka, Kinesis, Flink, Spark) and building data pipelines Experience leading teams that build/operate services for personalization, ad-tech, or marketing automation Demonstrated success in leading geographically distributed teams Experience collaborating with non-engineering partners (Data Science, Marketing, Legal, Privacy) This role may require limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join. The annual base pay range for this role is between $152,000 - $190,000 USD. We are an Equal Opportunity Employer.
