Position Summary The Technical Writer will be responsible for developing, editing, and maintaining high-quality technical documentation that supports Thunderbolt’s engineering, production, and customer-facing operations. This position requires strong writing, organizational, and analytical skills to translate complex technical information into clear, user-friendly materials. The ideal candidate will work closely with engineers, program managers, and quality teams to ensure documentation is accurate, compliant with customer and industry standards, and aligned with project objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and maintain technical documentation, including engineering specifications, test procedures, system descriptions, user manuals, installation guides, and maintenance documentation.
Collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs) across hardware, software, and systems engineering to gather and synthesize technical information.
Author, edit, and format documentation following MIL-STD, ASD S1000D, and company-specific standards.
Support documentation for proposal submissions, system verification, and qualification testing.
Create and manage configuration-controlled documents, ensuring proper versioning, approvals, and traceability.
Edit engineering documents for clarity, accuracy, and consistency in language, grammar, and formatting.
Assist in developing templates, style guides, and process improvements for technical communication consistency.
Support the preparation of customer data deliverables (CDRLs) and ensure compliance with contractual documentation requirements.
Integrate text, diagrams, and images using technical publishing tools to produce professional deliverables.
Ensure all documentation is compliant with company security, quality, and export control policies.
Education & Experience Bachelor’s degree
in one of the following fields (or a closely related discipline):
Technical Communication / Technical Writing
English / Professional Writing / Journalism
Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, or Systems)
Computer Science / Information Technology
Communications or Linguistics
Must have at least 2-4 years of experience:
Experience writing or editing technical documents, manuals, or test procedures in an academic or internship setting.
Familiarity with structured documentation formats (e.g., templates, style guides).
Ability to collaborate with engineers and translate technical language into clear user-oriented content.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience authoring documentation compliant with MIL-STD-38784, MIL-HDBK-1221, or ASD S1000D specifications.
Familiarity with document publishing tools such as Arbortext, FrameMaker, Confluence, or Adobe InDesign.
Experience in aerospace, defense, or complex systems engineering environments.
Understanding of DO-160, DO-254, or DO-178C testing documentation standards.
Strong visual communication skills, with the ability to create and edit technical illustrations or graphics.
Compensation Statement (New York Pay Transparency Notice) In accordance with New York State’s pay transparency requirements, the anticipated annual salary range for this position is $85,000 to $110,000. This range represents a good-faith estimate of the base salary that Thunderbolt Solutions reasonably expects to pay for this role at the time of posting.
Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as job scope, experience, education, certifications, and market conditions. This position may also be eligible for a company performance bonus and comprehensive benefits, including health insurance, paid time off (PTO), and a 401(k) plan.
