Leidos Engineering has an opportunity for a Substation Project Engineer. This position will be part of our unique and fast‑growing EPC Solutions group, which sits within our Power Delivery Solutions division that provides consulting services to public‑owned and investor‑owned electric utilities. These services include overall project management, comprehensive engineering design of electrical transmission and distribution, substation, and transmission line projects nationwide.

As a Substation Project Engineer, you can expect to:

Lead or perform substation physical electrical design at HV and EHV voltage levels (general arrangement, electrical plans and sections, grounding, raceway, shielding, lighting, etc.) while adhering to prevailing standards and project requirements.

Lead or perform protection and control engineering design (relaying, AC/DC schematics, metering, SCADA systems, station communications and automation, security, etc.) at HV and EHV voltage levels.

Conduct engineering studies and calculations (bus spans, shielding, lighting, conduit fill, AC/DC loading, system design).

Apply industry standards, state and federal safety codes, and construction codes to projects.

Create equipment, material, construction, testing and commissioning specifications.

Perform quality control reviews and lead QC review meetings on deliverables produced by junior staff and remote offices, following PDS quality standards.

Provide technical oversight, direction, and support for project teams.

Ensure proper documentation of project technical data.

Facilitate collaboration across disciplines and resolve design conflicts.

Coordinate with project managers to deliver projects to our clients.

Act as client point of contact and manage client-related issues.

Conduct client meetings and job‑site visits for design and engineering information.

Evaluate existing facilities to propose upgrades and replacements, presenting findings to clients.

Prepare conceptual design (one‑line and general layout) to support planning.

Prepare and review proposals, technical write‑ups, and project scope documents for projects of all sizes.

Create project schedules using MS Project or Primavera to support proposal development.

Present proposals, estimates, and technical write‑ups to management.

Provide technical training and mentorship to junior staff through presentations and workshops.

Maintain a positive professional example for the team.

What Sets You Apart (Background Qualifications):

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with 8+ years of utility substation design/engineering experience.

Professional Engineer (PE) license (required).

Demonstrated advocacy for quality assurance and control in substation engineering.

Comprehensive understanding of utility grid systems and substation engineering principles.

Deep knowledge of NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE/ANSI standards and their application.

Strong analytical skills with the ability to research, evaluate alternatives, and present recommendations.

Ability to meet deadlines under high‑pressure conditions.

Proficiency with MS Office and other engineering software.

Team‑player mindset, working effectively with diverse individuals.

Excellent written and oral communication and strong organizational skills.

Travel locally/regionally up to 15% of the time.

You Might Also Have (Preferred Qualifications):

Experience with substation physical and protection/control design.

Experience with engineering programs such as SKM, ASPEN, ETAP, CDEGS or vendor software.

Experience serving as firm‑client liaison in a support and lead engineering role.

Prior experience leading renewable generation projects or interconnections.

Experience on EPC projects or similar contracts.

Active membership in national engineering societies (IEEE, PES, etc.).

Construction support experience.
