Job Summary
Facilities Management (FM) Outdoor Services at CU Boulder is seeking a
Horticulturist
for East Campus. The role supports high quality, professional grounds and landscape services, enhances campus safety and aesthetics, and performs duties such as snow removal during winter months. The position manages horticulture issues, including weed and pest infestations, and implements chemical, mechanical, or natural control methods.

Responsibilities
Landscape Management Practices . Assist with the East Campus Grounds Shrub & Bed Management Plan: trash removal, pruning, watering, fertilizing, weeding, chemical applications, and maintenance of vine, rock, shrub, annual, and perennial landscape beds. Coordinate with the East Campus Horticulture Supervisor and Grounds Staff. Maintain accurate records of bed applications and recommend improvements.
General Landscape Maintenance . Perform tasks such as manual weeding, mowing, string trimming, edging, drainage corrections, irrigation, tree care, turf management, and hard‑scape maintenance. May assist Campus Arborist activities and work outside regular hours, including weekends.
Chemical Applications . Conduct pre‑ and post‑emergent herbicide and insecticide applications in both general fund and recharge areas. Safely mix chemicals, follow labeling, maintain records, and ensure signage. May work weekends as needed.
Safety . Adhere to state, local, and university safety guidelines. Attend trainings, review safety manuals, and advise co‑workers on safe practices, especially concerning chemical handling.
Snow & Ice Removal . Perform mechanical and hand shoveling and ice abatement for sidewalks, stairs, bus stops, and other campus surfaces. This essential service may require work during emergencies.
Qualifications
Colorado residency and valid driver’s license.
Two years of increasing responsibility in grounds care, greenhouse, or plant nursery general labor work.
Obtained or currently holding a Colorado Department of Agriculture Certified Operators License (or higher) with category 207 (Ornamental Pest Control) within 12 months of hire.
Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
Strong communication, problem‑solving, and customer‑service skills.
Knowledge of horticulture and landscape management; crew/lead worker experience preferred.
