This entry-level position is responsible for performing drafting and engineering support duties. The role is designed to build competence through structured work assignments under the guidance of a supervisor, manager, or experienced colleagues. Responsibilities may focus on drafting, engineering support, or a combination of both.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct field observations and gather engineering data.

Prepare and update as-built drawings based on field edits.

Read and interpret engineering and construction drawings, as well as other technical documentation.

Use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create detailed engineering drawings, maps, and graphs from sketches, layouts, and reference materials. Clearly indicate revisions and file documentation per standard procedures.

Assist in drafting solicitation documents using established templates to support procurement and contract activities.

Perform field and office research using historical drawings, equipment databases, microfilm, inventory records, and electronic document management systems (EDMS) to support design and layout efforts.

Prepare basic specifications, materials lists, and fixed capital unit (FCU) lists.

Assist in setting up work orders and requisition entries.

Enter data into departmental engineering databases.

Prepare basic reports related to projects, equipment, assets, and budgets; assist with more complex reporting as needed.

Operate equipment such as plotters, printers, copiers, and scanners.

Travel independently to various company locations (e.g., substations, power plants, water systems) to gather engineering information.

Minimum Qualifications

Five or more years of experience interpreting technical drawings/documents and performing technical analysis or drafting using CAD software. A degree in computer-aided design or a related field may substitute for some years of experience, per company guidelines.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of engineering and drafting principles, standards, and techniques.

Familiarity with electronic document management systems (EDMS) and work management systems.

Basic proficiency in CAD software and office productivity tools (e.g., email, word processing, spreadsheets).

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, prints, and technical information.

Skill in using test equipment and specialized tools.

Strong problem-solving and communication skills (verbal and written).

Ability to perform accurate data entry and work effectively in a team environment.

Proficiency in operating plotters, printers, copiers, and scanners.

Work Environment

Work is performed in office, industrial, electrical substation, and/or plant settings.

Exposure to noise and varying weather conditions is expected.

Physical Demands

Frequent use of keyboard and mouse.

Occasional climbing, crawling, crouching, or other non‑sitting positions during field duties (less than 20% of the time).

Occasional standing and walking during field duties (less than 20% of the time).
