Primary Purpose Of Organizational Unit The Engineering Services Department (ES) provides engineering services to the UNC Chapel Hill campus, a highly complex campus with a large number and variety of buildings and structures. ES is responsible for project development for all University Engineering‑led projects, management of capital budgets, administration of design contracts, development of engineering design standards, inspection of projects, engineering support of Building Services personnel, leads energy management and water conservation efforts, and building commissioning services.

Position Summary Salary: $150,000.00–$250,000.00

Sign‑on bonus of $7,500 is available: $3,750 within 30 days of hire and $3,750 twelve months after hire.

The Senior Electrical Engineer is the primary subject matter expert on building electrical systems operated and maintained by Facilities Services. Responsibilities include reviewing capital improvement projects at all design phases, supporting construction and warranty efforts, maintaining the University’s Electrical Design Guidelines, providing technical guidance and design oversight, and collaborating with cross‑functional teams.

Responsibilities

Review major capital improvement projects at all design phases and support construction and warranty efforts.

Maintain University’s Electrical Design Guidelines and coordinate with internal stakeholders.

Provide technical guidance and design oversight for Facilities Engineering’s electrical team.

Collaborate with engineers and technical staff across Facilities Services, Environmental Health and Safety, and campus‑wide groups.

Advocate for safe, sustainable, high‑performing building systems.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in the engineering discipline related to the area of assignment or equivalent combination.

Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of NC at the start of employment (or eligible for NC PE license).

Valid NC driver’s license or ability to obtain one before start date.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience

Substantial knowledge of professional engineering theory, techniques, practices, and building codes.

Experience in engineering design and construction practices.

Ability to review designs, estimate costs, and technically direct others.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Knowledge of NC Electrical Code.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum of seven years of progressive experience in engineering project design and management.

Knowledge of research and specialty lab facilities and power quality issues.

Prior experience working with NC State Construction Office and NC University System Office.

Strong interpersonal, leadership, and fiscal management skills.

Sign‑On Bonus Eligibility Eligible for a sign‑on bonus if: not worked in a probationary, permanent, or time‑limited appointment in last 12 months as an employee in North Carolina state government, including but not limited to the judicial system, state executive branch agencies and university system. New permanent full‑time staff are eligible (prorated for part‑time). Bonus contingent upon budget and final eligibility.
