In Short The Senior Financial Accountant serves as a cornerstone of financial stewardship at Food Bank for the Heartland safeguarding the organization’s fiscal integrity through precise, timely and transparent partnership with the Director of Finance and Accounting. This role drives the accuracy of financial operations, advances robust grant and federal award management and ensures unwavering compliance with regulatory standards. Through diligence, insight and innovation the Senior Financial Accountant upholds the highest levels of accountability and operational excellence in support of FBFH’s mission to nourish our communities.
Your Mission
Advance Financial Stewardship & Strategic Insight – Partner with the Director of Finance and Accounting to drive the organization’s financial integrity through the precise and timely execution of month‑end and year‑end closings.
Deliver accurate reconciliations, sophisticated analyses and thought‑out variance narratives that strengthen leadership’s decision‑making and fiscal transparency.
Produce high‑quality financial data and reports that illuminate trends, inform strategy and demonstrate the prudent stewardship of FBFH resources.
Maintain comprehensive balance sheet reconciliations and detailed fixed‑asset schedules ensuring all financial records meet the highest standards of accuracy and compliance.
Lead Grant & Federal Award Accounting Excellence – Champion the full lifecycle of grant and restricted‑fund management ensuring every dollar is tracked, allocated and reported with precision and compliance.
Design and maintain robust grant tracking systems and reporting tools that align budgets, accounting records and reporting deliverables across departments.
Partner proactively with all teams with impact on grant management, specifically programs and External Affairs, to ensure expenditures reflect approved funding sources and donor intent while supporting timely compliant submissions.
Coordinate and prepare detailed financial documentation for federal pass‑through awards and other government grants supporting annual audits and single audit readiness.
Anticipate and mitigate risks through vigilant monitoring, meticulous record‑keeping and transparent communication with leadership.
Safeguard Compliance & Strengthen Internal Controls – Reinforce and enhance internal control systems that ensure adherence to GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards and FBFH’s financial policies.
Identify control gaps and recommend practical solutions to maintain accountability and reduce organizational risk.
Support timely and accurate completion of TEFAP state and federal compliance filings.
Protect the confidentiality and integrity of all financial data through sound judgment and ethical decision‑making.
Innovate Systems and Process Optimization – Drive modernization and efficiency within the accounting function by leveraging technology and data‑driven process improvements.
Contribute to the implementation and continuous refinement of cloud‑based financial platforms such as NetSuite, Concur and Warelinx.
Develop documentation and knowledge resources that institutionalize consistency, clarity and continuous learning across the finance team.
Model a growth mindset embracing innovation and new approaches.
Ensure Audit Readiness & Budget Alignment – Lead preparation for annual financial and single audits, producing comprehensive schedules, reconciliations and supporting documentation that reflect strong fiscal governance.
Collaborate cross‑functionally to ensure grant and departmental budgets align with organizational strategy and regulatory expectations.
Deliver timely and transparent information to auditors, funders and internal stakeholders reflecting the highest level of professionalism and organizational credibility.

Maintain positive working relationships with supervisor, co‑workers and other departmental staff.
Proficiency in U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Ability to learn the Office of Management and Budget’s Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards (Uniform Guidance).
Your Story
A minimum of three (3) years experience in accounting or finance.
A bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance is required; a master’s degree is preferred.
Non‑profit accounting and government auditing standards experience strongly preferred.
Lived experience with the impacts of systemic racism or marginalization is a plus.
