The Department of Computer Science in the Whitacre College of Engineering at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full‑time, 9‑month Associate Professor of Practice to begin on September 1st, 2026. About the College The Whitacre College of Engineering (WCOE) serves approximately 5,125 undergraduate and 1,053 graduate students, supported by 204 faculty and instructors. The college offers BS, MS and PhD programs in disciplines such as Chemical Engineering, Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Industrial, Manufacturing and Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Petroleum Engineering. All BS programs and the Environmental Engineering master’s program are ABET‑accredited. In 2024, the college had approximately $23 million in federal research expenditures, contributing to a total research expenditure of $49 million.
About the Department/School/Area The Department of Computer Science has 100 PhD students, 218 Master students, and 885 undergraduate students (including 474 majors and 411 foundational students) as of Fall 2025. The department offers Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, Master of Science in Software & Security Engineering, and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Computer Science programs. The department currently has 29 faculty members, including 21 tenured or tenure‑track and 8 teaching faculty.
Major/Essential Functions At Texas Tech University, the Professor of Practice title is used to recruit individuals with exceptional backgrounds and achievements in academic, business, government, or other professional practice. Primary responsibilities will be to teach in an area of expertise, mentor students in professional and career preparation, and liaise with professional contacts and entities on behalf of the department or program. Applicants should have experience working with a breadth of student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels in teaching, research/creative activity, and service.
Faculty Qualifications
Applicants must have a Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Computer Science or related fields.
Applicants must be able to teach undergraduate and graduate core and elective courses in Computer Science.
Applicants must be willing to mentor students in professional and career preparation and contribute to departmental extra‑curricular activities.
This position is designated as involving access to critical infrastructure systems and/or research, as defined by Texas Executive Order GA‑48. Candidates must successfully complete a comprehensive background check prior to employment and comply with all applicable state and federal regulations related to the protection of critical infrastructure. Ongoing employment is dependent upon maintaining eligibility for access and successfully passing periodic security and compliance reviews.
Preferred Qualifications
Applicants with a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science or related fields.
Applicants with 5 or more years of teaching or industry experience.
Applicants with outreach and program‑building experience.
