Power Plant Engineer Onward Energy, an independent power platform that owns and operates over 7 GW of utility-scale wind, solar and natural gas generation projects across the U.S., is looking for a Power Plant Engineer to join the team at the Mankato Energy Center (MEC) in Minnesota.

Base Pay Range $125,000.00/yr – $138,000.00/yr

THE OPPORTUNITY This position is responsible for capital project management, plant engineering, operations & maintenance support, and compliance support. It involves monitoring plant availability, thermal efficiency, and cost of production, while providing technical support for plant and process improvements.

THE RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist the Management Team in overseeing mission‑critical programs and processes, including NERC and EH&S compliance, outage management, project management, asset integrity and financial management.

Lead safety initiatives, including safety meetings, job briefs, audits, training, accident investigations, and job site observations.

Maintain compliance across environmental, health, safety, NERC, security, fire protection, water chemistry, contractor, grounds maintenance, and inventory/procurement domains.

Manage capital improvement projects, ensuring budgetary and contractual guarantees are met through RFQs, bid evaluation, and project implementation.

Coordinate external engineering contacts, manufacturer representatives, service personnel, and vendors to resolve issues and discuss equipment changes.

Collaborate with Onward Corporate Engineering Teams for outages, technical planning, work scopes, efficiency improvements, and troubleshooting.

Develop and enforce document control practices for site drawings and documentation.

Analyze equipment failures, root cause determination, and recommend cost‑effective solutions.

Assist in plant problem investigations, incident reporting, and follow‑up actions.

Administer contracts and work scopes for external contractors to maximize efficiency.

Maintain frequent internal communication with plant personnel for problem resolution and technical support.

Support continuous improvement programs, CMMS, and procedural reviews.

Track forced outages, loss of generation, and conduct root cause analysis.

Prepare planned outage work scopes and schedules.

Provide plant performance, data telemetry, and improvement support to the Management Team.

Interface with Siemens and Toshiba on equipment performance and LTSA activities.

Contribute to operation and maintenance training programs.

Support environmental testing, data collection, and reporting.

Work under limited supervision or as part of a team; independently prioritize and execute responsibilities.

Provide management direction in the absence of others on the Management Team.

Support job responsibilities outside of scheduled hours and occasionally travel.

Perform other duties as assigned.

THE PROFILE TO SUCCEED

Demonstrate leadership behaviors: respect, responsibility, compassion, integrity, self‑awareness, courage, and patience.

Bachelor of Science in engineering is preferred; otherwise, at least 5 years of power generation operations/maintenance experience.

Strong understanding of power plant operations and maintenance activities.

Familiarity with OSHA, EPA, and NERC compliance programs.

Excellent writing, analytical, and presentation skills.

Experience with plant data historian, trending, and performance monitoring tools.

Knowledge of piping and instrument schematics and process controls.

Moderate working knowledge of Maximo is desired.

Commitment to conduct and integrity in all dealings.

CEMS/DAHS experience is desired.

Proficiency with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and related software.

Good judgment, decision‑making, and prioritization skills.

Valid U.S. Driver’s license with an acceptable MVR history.

THE PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Must be able to accomplish physical requirements with or without reasonable accommodation.

Stand, walk, bend, squat, and lift up to 50 lbs. Use arms and hands for signaling, grabbing, holding, turning, pushing, and pulling.

Occasionally work at heights, climb ladders and stairways, and use platforms.

Use visual and auditory senses to detect alarms, equipment conditions, and instructions.

Work extended hours, varied shifts, weekends, holidays, with on‑call status required.

Wear PPE, including hard hat, goggles, ear protection, respirators, vests, gloves, and steel‑toe boots.

THE WORK ENVIRONMENT The job is mainly performed inside the power plant under varied weather conditions. Typical noise levels are moderate to high, and the site contains heavy equipment, vehicles, and tools. Occasional travel to other sites is required.
