Join WDFW and help ensure hatchery operations run smoothly and efficiently across Washington.

As part of the Capital and Asset Management Program (CAMP), you’ll play an essential role in maintaining the water alarm and control systems that support fish hatcheries statewide.

In this role, you’ll assist in building, testing, and maintaining the mechanical, electronic, and electrical controls that keep our facilities operating safely and reliably.

What to Expect Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Control Technician will,

Hatchery Water Alarm Systems

Perform construction, installation, relocation, maintenance and repair of water alarm systems.

Troubleshoot alarm system issues to determine which fixtures are causing the temporary failure of the system.

Test alarm systems to ensure that it functions as anticipated.

Install piping and pull wire to floats, float switches, and probes.

Existing Alarm System Upgrades/Relocations

Perform pre- and post-installation testing to ensure design operates as anticipated.

Read and interpret control and wiring diagrams.

General Labor on Construction and Maintenance Projects

Perform various general manual labors that support various trades such as electricians, carpenters, equipment operators, welders, and mechanics.

Working Conditions Work Setting, including hazards

Duties are performed at construction sites on hatchery and wildlife areas and on occasion in a fabrication shop.

Hazards include working on rough terrain, riverbanks, slippery slopes, and other surfaces, confined and difficult to reach spaces, and working and driving in all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat, rain, or snow.

Bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, and lifting of 50 pounds repetitively when loading and unloading trucks or moving materials around project site.

This position may involve working in or near water, including tasks that require navigating, negotiating, and performing duties related to water environments.

Some tasks will involve sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Schedule This position is full-time, working 40 hours per week. The standard work schedule includes the potential for occasional evening or weekend work as needed. Alternative schedules may be considered based on business needs.

Travel Requirements Travel required 60-80% depending on season.

Tools and Equipment Basic hand tools, power tools such as drills, roto hammers, cut off saws, circular saws, metal band saws, impact drivers, pipe benders and threaders, powered motors, automotive equipment, and trailers. Equipment such as milling machines, sand blaster, parts washer, hydraulic punch, and metal lathes.

Customer Interactions Frequent interactions varying between Federal, Local, Inter-Agency, and Intra-Agency customers and vendors.

Qualifications Required Qualifications Option 1

Completion of a two (2) year approved institution course as a Control Technician Trainee.

Option 2

Four (4) years of applicable experience in installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical and pneumatic control systems.

Option 3

Vocational trade school training in control mechanisms.

AND

Two (2) years of applicable experience in installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical and pneumatic control systems.

Certifications/Licenses Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment Successful completion of agency training and/or certification is dependent on supervisory direction, position need and training availability:

First Aid and CPR Certification (within six (6) months of employment)

Preferred Qualifications In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all the following: Experience

Five (5) or more years of experience in:

Operation, maintenance, repair, and modification of air systems.

Pneumatic and electronic monitoring and measuring instruments.

Test instruments used in operation, calibration, and repair of electronic and pneumatic instruments.

Reading instructional manuals, blueprints, drawings, diagrams, plans, and sketches using electrical and electronic symbols.

Two (2) or more years of experience in:

Fabricate minor equipment and electrical circuitry.

Certifications/Licenses

Valid First Aid and CPR Certification.
