As a Field Service Technician – Network Specialist, you will maintain a highly reliable network of systems, including central office switches, carrier and transmission equipment, fiber electronics, business communication systems, and ancillary equipment. Responsibilities include installing and maintaining network infrastructure and circuits, providing advanced troubleshooting support, leading projects, and delivering excellent customer service while informing customers about TDS products and services.

Responsibilities

Installs, troubleshoots, tests, splices, repairs, and maintains telephone equipment and general network equipment, customer premise equipment, Video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities, and other TDS products for new and existing customers. Installs, configures, maintains, and repairs PBX, Key Systems, Centrex Systems, business systems, fiber terminals, POTS, ISDN, DSL, T‑1s, and/or DS3s (carriers, paging & wireless). Identifies cable location with test equipment, repairs buried, aerial, and customer cable, and performs pole climbing and operating construction equipment. Maintains logs of locate requests and performs cable fault acceptance tests.

Installs, troubleshoots, tests, repairs, and maintains central office equipment including switches, operating software, and auxiliary equipment. Maintains backups, voicemail, fiber optic terminals, and updates manuals.

Provides advanced troubleshooting support techniques and corrections and responds to “trouble” dispatches.

Maintains high‑level support for record systems (cross‑connects, line groups, network elements, etc.).

Provides excellent customer service and proactively educates and sells TDS products and services to customers.

Performs project management for system installations and related functions as requested by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications

2+ years technical telecommunications experience OR current/prior military service with honorable discharge.

1+ year of basic fiber optic and/or copper cable splicing and repair, installation, and switch training.

Valid driver’s license.

Must follow TDS attendance guidelines in order to meet business needs.

Other Qualifications

Must pass all components of the Safety Course curriculum and background check required by the customer.

Available for on‑call/standby responsibilities, occasional travel, and overtime as needed.

Must maintain DOT requirements for vehicles with GVRW >10,000 lbs.

In-depth understanding of telecommunication products and services, including fiber optic transmission, PBX systems, structured wiring, and IP telephony.

Proficient with computer applications (Databases, MS Office, troubleshooting systems, etc.).

Independent decision maker with little or no supervision.

Strong customer service and sales skills with effective verbal and written communication.

Excellent organizational skills and ability to multitask.

Physical capability to operate heavy construction machinery, lift, dig, and climb; can operate manual‑transmission vehicles.

Willingness to work various/swing shifts as business needs dictate.

Physical Demands and Work Environment The position requires frequent sitting, standing, writing, and operating a computer keyboard. You will communicate with customers, move, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, balance, climb, and lift up to 100 lbs. Work may be outdoors or in equipment rooms under extreme weather conditions, exposing you to moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment.

Pay Transparency The listed pay range reflects the minimum and maximum base salary. Actual offers will be based on factors such as skills, qualifications, experience, location, and role‑specific competencies. Some positions may also offer additional compensation, such as bonuses or equity awards.

Pay Range $27.62/Hr. - $41.42/Hr.
