Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence‑based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. With 1,060 experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff, UBHC is dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education. UBHC is one of the largest providers of behavioral health care in the country, with a $260 million budget and 15 sites throughout New Jersey. Services include inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, screening, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, supported employment, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school. Specialty services include the New Jersey suicide prevention helpline and peer help lines for police, veterans, active military, teachers, mothers of special‑needs children and child protective service workers. In FY2016, UBHC treated 16,199 consumers, had 24,502 admissions, and reached 19,441 individual callers through peer support. UBHC is the primary mental health training resource for the New Jersey departments of Human Services, Children and Families, and Corrections, delivering 16,000 trainings each year.

Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Mental Health Specialist III for the Residential Department within University Behavioral Healthcare (UBHC). The primary purpose of the Mental Health Specialist III is to ensure the safety of residents and assist them in carrying out activities of daily living.

Key Duties

Assumes individual service coordination responsibilities for individuals served. Documents events occurring on shift as per supervisory directive. Demonstrates awareness of relevant organization and residential policies, procedures and requirements. Demonstrates respect to supervisory feedback to enhance performance skills. Effectively contributes to and supports an environment that enhances the positive self‑image of consumer/resident and preserves their human dignity. Completes Employee Health Update as required.

Position Details

FLSA: Nonexempt Grade: 177 Salary Range: $26,730 – $28,050 (mid point $27,230) Benefits: Medical, prescription drug, and dental coverage; paid vacation, holidays, and leave programs; competitive retirement benefits; educational benefits; life insurance; employee discount programs. Position Status: Part Time Working Hours: Every other Saturday and Sunday, 8 am – 4:30 pm (40 hrs per week) Daily Work Shift: Day Work Arrangement: Fully on‑site Union: Teamsters 97/Ineligible

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience: Three (3) years of full‑time paid experience in the mental health field or two (2) years of college majoring in a relevant social or health care field plus one (1) year of full‑time experience in the mental health field. Certifications/Licenses: Valid driver’s license. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Must be able to travel to meetings and scattered program locations throughout the week, including holidays, evenings, weekends, and overnight; must possess own vehicle to outreach individuals served and attend internal and external meetings. Preferred Qualifications: Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) preferred; residential experience with the adult mental health population preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Walks and climbs stairs. Transports individuals to community appointments and activities. Lifts up to 20 lbs. Provides 24‑hour responsibility for residential services for adults with severe and persistent mental illness, forensic histories, and drug/alcohol abuse with history of homelessness and co‑occurring medical issues; intense work environment with ongoing crisis assessment and intervention. Exposure to infestations and blood‑borne pathogens possible; requires use of personal protective equipment.

Special Conditions

Requires random drug screening.

Immunization Requirements

Under Policy 100.3.1 Immunization Policy for Covered Individuals, if employment will commence during Flu Season, Rutgers University may require certain prospective employees to provide proof that they are vaccinated against Seasonal Influenza for the current Flu Season, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Additional infection control and safety policies may apply.
