Job Summary The Automation & Controls Engineer is responsible for creation, design, and change management of machine control and safety systems for food processing equipment in a washdown environment. Work includes design of PLC/PCB hardware and software, motor controls, pneumatic controls, vision system, cabling, interlock devices, wiring and networking components. Documentation requirements include creation and maintenance of schematics and compiled code.
Responsibilities
Always follow UL and CE safety design requirements and safeguard others’ safety
Responsible for researching, planning, and designing electrical control systems associated with food processing equipment and/or control system installations.
Motion and motor control hardware selection and PLC programming.
Interface PLC/HMI to building network (SCADA, TCP/IP, Profinet, etc).
Sensor selection and PLC programming.
PLC module selection and integration.
PCB layout, software and programming.
HMI design and integration to machine/customer network.
Coordinates activities involved in the fabrication, operation, applications, installation, and repair of electrical systems.
Programming responsibilities to include, but not limited to, the development, installation and maintenance of software systems on customer sites such as operating systems, development software, and communications programming
Consistently and accurately follow standard work procedures, policies, etc.
Must be able to travel domestically and internationally 20% of the time
Consistently achieve job and performance expectations efficiently, effectively, and on-time with little to no supervision or direction
Perform all other duties and assist with special projects as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Other Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology required - from an ABET accredited Engineering program
Knowledge of control panel design including HMI systems, VFD and servo motor systems, remote I/O, pneumatic controls, analog and digital I/O required
Experience with Power distribution design (DC, Single and Three Phase) required
Knowledge of Network Design and Configuration Ethernet TCP/IP Modbus UDP, Ethercat, RS485 required
Experience in data acquisition and evaluation using SQL, Azure, and MS PowerBI is a plus
Knowledge of Pneumatic Systems Design required
Experience with Process Instrumentation sensors and interlocking devices required
Project Management experience in new product design development and implementation
Experience with programming PC, PLC, and PCB using Structured Text, Ladder Logic, C, and C# required
Programming experience using TwinCAT, CODESYS, MS Visual Studio, and MPLab software
Use of Visio and/or other software packages for creation of system schematics
Knowledge of HMI Design and Programming required
Optical sensor/camera and robotic systems experience is a plus
Must keep a valid US driver’s license
Must have, or be able to obtain, a passport for international travel
