Position Summary The Assistant Director of STEM and Food Science provides strategic and operational leadership for the STEM and Food Science division across all K–12 afterschool and enrichment sites. This role is responsible for the execution of department-wide goals, ensuring that STEM and Food Science programs are developmentally appropriate, culturally responsive, and aligned with state standards. As a leader of the STEM and Food Science department, the Assistant Director directs daily operations, supervises Senior STEM and Food Science Specialists, and oversees instructional quality across all program locations. In addition to programmatic leadership, the Assistant Director of STEM and Food Science handles a range of administrative duties to ensure smooth departmental functioning. This includes reviewing and submitting site reports, managing invoices and documentation, tracking program data, and coordinating department-wide meetings. The Assistant Director of STEM and Food Science works in close partnership with the Director of STEM and Food Science, offering high-level support on strategic planning, internal coordination, and cross-functional projects as needed.

Key Responsibilities Curriculum & Instruction

Co-design STEM and Food Science curriculum and experiences for all grade levels, specifically tailored for out-of-school-time (OST) programming.

Develop lesson plans that align with New York State ELA Standards, student development guidelines, and the NYC Reads initiative.

Ensure curriculum reflects engaging, student-centered practices and fosters youth voice and creativity.

Staff Development

Support the design and delivery of professional development sessions for literacy specialists and site-based staff.

Build and maintain strong working relationships with program staff to foster collaboration and support.

Conduct classroom/site observations to inform training and coaching strategies.

Develop and maintain training materials, tools, and resources for staff use.

Provide ongoing coaching, modeling, and mentorship to literacy specialists to strengthen instructional quality.

Marketing, Grants, Data & Reporting

Manage the production of internal program and marketing materials.

Assist in researching, developing, and writing STEM and Food Science-related grant proposals to support program funding and expansion.

Collect, maintain, and analyze program data to track impact and effectiveness.

Prepare and share reports with internal and external stakeholders as needed.

Support the coordination of the subcontractor process

Events & Special Projects

Assist in the coordination and execution of STEM events and special projects.

Support the STEM Department in showcasing student work, building family engagement, and creating opportunities for community connection.

Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree in literacy or education is required

At least five years of experience teaching youth in an educational or community setting

Proven ability to collect and maintain data

Experience leading professional development and/or staff coaching

Demonstrated skill and passion for literacy

Ability to travel and work in person

Strong communication and organizational skills

Must be at least 18 years of age

Compensation & Benefits Salary Range: $60,000-65,000 Annually, commensurate with education and experience.
