Senior Professional, Structural Engineer
to join our team in
New York City, New York . This opportunity involves structural engineering analysis, design, site-work, reviews of third-party work, and other project tasks for investigation, remediation, improvement, and/or construction of bridge-focused infrastructure projects in the public and private sectors. Tasks may include conducting or leading structural engineering research, design, concept development, planning, and construction of load-bearing structures or structural elements such as buildings, bridges, roadways, and mechanical structures. Substantiates reports and documentation regarding materials, installations, and construction specifications. Represents the project team/WSP at client and project meetings, participates in business development and preparation of technical and cost proposals, oversees work, and supports the development of junior structural engineers. Ensures responsibilities are delivered with quality that meets or exceeds industry standards for design, safety, structural soundness, and functionality. Roles may include design engineer, task lead/manager, project engineer, or deputy project manager for structural and multi-discipline projects. Your Impact Determine well-defined methods for collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, hydrologic analysis, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction. Perform professional structural engineering work and conduct research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, building, infrastructure, and transportation channels to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and permits. Develop construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates; prepare construction safety and phasing plans, and update infrastructure layout plans requiring coordination with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients. Develop or incorporate advanced modeling techniques, design requirements, and operating strategies to account for safety and functionality of end-users and transportation systems, aiming for future-ready solutions within structural design standards. Work individually or as part of a cross-functional team to execute project work on multiple concurrent projects, assist with laying out installations, establish reference points/elevations/grades to guide construction, select materials to ensure durability, calculate costs and quantities, and ensure project work conforms with specifications, permits, compliance documentation, and technical memos. Verify site characteristics and provide technical guidance to ensure structural soundness from loads and pressures caused by environmental or human factors. Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, reports, sketches, calculations, and 2D/3D illustrations for interpretation or presentation of data and findings. Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting. Assist with development and scoping of medium-sized projects. Provide guidance and training to entry-level engineers. Prepare technical reports and presentations explaining research, findings, and recommendations to address design and/or construction issues or opportunities. Assist in analysis and interpretation of data from site investigations, contributing to action plans for risk mitigation activities. Prepare and implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs). Comply with regulatory requirements for data integrity, documentation, procedures, training, monitoring systems, and record retention. Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a confident and professional manner. Remain current in the latest structural engineering techniques and practices. Collaborate with other engineers, professionals, and infrastructure authorities on federal, state, regional, local, and privately funded projects. Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds and resources, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies. Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering or closely related discipline. 5 to 7 years of relevant post-education experience in structural engineering. Registered Professional Engineer in New York State or able to obtain via reciprocity is highly preferred. Proficient knowledge of structural engineering principles, practices, processes, design/build, and application to project work-related issues. Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management; including involvement in rehabilitation and new design projects. Working knowledge of sustainability concepts and reducing hazardous substances/greenhouse gas use and generation. Working knowledge of relevant structural and civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements. Ability to perform technical computations, understand plans and specifications, and compare to regulations. Project management experience with small to mid-size projects including tracking hours and expenses. Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations of construction and design aspects, applying applicable regulations and policies. Effective interpersonal and communication skills with both engineering and non-engineering audiences. Strong self-leadership, attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization in a dynamic environment. Ability to work independently and provide guidance to junior team members with QA/QC adherence. Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, and discipline-specific design software (e.g., STAAD, Larsa, Midas, MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS). Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply technical knowledge to data and testing results. Ability to direct others in the field to complete tasks safely and efficiently. Proven track record of workplace safety and compliance with health, safety, and anti-harassment policies. Ability to work schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek and occasional travel as project needs require. Occasional travel may be required. Preferred Qualifications Master’s Degree in Engineering. Experience in structural engineering task leadership and/or managing small to mid-size projects.
