Overview
The City is hiring fleet mechanics at various levels to repair and maintain the city's fleet of automotive and heavy vehicles and equipment. Current vacancies are with the Department of Facility Maintenance, Automotive Equipment Service Division.
Fleet Mechanic Levels
Fleet Mechanic I (BC-08)
– $5,471/month. Entry‑level opportunity for individuals pursuing a career in the repair and maintenance of automotive and/or heavy vehicles and equipment. Must meet the minimum qualification requirements and be capable of attaining the skills required to progress to the journey level.
Fleet Mechanic II (BC-10)
– $6,079/month. Independently repairs and overhauls a variety of gasoline, diesel and alternative fuel vehicles and equipment in the City’s fleet, including light vehicles, construction equipment, and heavy vehicles such as refuse trucks and dump trucks.
Fleet Mechanic III (BC-11)
– $6,300/month. Independently repairs, maintains and overhauls a variety of heavy motorized vehicles and equipment—refuse trucks, dump trucks, cranes, bulldozers, rollers, graders—in a substantially full‑time assignment.
Special Work Conditions
May be required to work weekends and holidays.
May be subject to rotating and/or night shift work.

Experience Requirements
Fleet Mechanic I:
Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to competently perform the skills and duties of this position. Typically obtained through completion of a recognized automotive or diesel mechanic program, with knowledge of basic components, mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic theory, modern diagnostic techniques, and routine mechanical repairs and adjustments.
Fleet Mechanic II:
Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to competently perform the journey level skills and duties. Must include maintenance and overhauls of light and heavy motorized vehicles and equipment in the City’s fleet, assisting in more difficult and complex tasks with supplemental training.
Fleet Mechanic III:
Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to competently perform the journey level skills and duties, including repair and overhaul of complex hydraulic and electrical systems on heavy vehicles such as dump trucks, truck tractors, and refuse trucks.
Education / Training Credits
Associate’s degree in Applied Science (AAS) in Diesel Mechanics Technology may be used to qualify for the Fleet Mechanic I level.
Certificate of Achievement in Automotive Technology or Diesel Mechanics may be given credit with relevant work experience.
Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certificates may be given credit with relevant work experience under a journey level mechanic.
License / Certificate Requirements
Valid Driver’s License (Type 3). Prior to appointment.
D.O.T. Medical Exam Certificate. Prior to appointment.
Valid Commercial Driver’s License (Type B). By the end of probation.
Certificate approved by the Environmental Protection Agency. By the end of probation.
State Department of Transportation Safety Inspector Certificate. Prior to appointment.
Certificate of Fitness for Crane and Hoist Operator. Prior to appointment.
