Founded in 1909 and affiliated with the Episcopal Church, The Bishop’s School is an independent, all gender college-preparatory school for 800 students in grades six through twelve. The School is located on a historic campus in the heart of La Jolla, just 10 miles north of downtown San Diego. With a student‑teacher ratio of approximately 9 to 1, Bishop’s is known for academic, artistic, and athletic excellence while celebrating character development, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. Last year’s applicant pool drew from 72 zip codes and 168 middle and high schools throughout San Diego County and beyond. Fifty‑one percent of the student population self‑identify as students of color. Additionally, over $4 million in need‑based grants is awarded annually.

The Bishop’s School seeks a Major Gifts Officer (MGO) with an immediate start. Reporting to the Senior Director of Major and Principal Gifts (Senior Director), the MGO will work collaboratively with the Senior Director and frontline fundraising team to achieve aspirational goals for major giving, while maintaining strong solicitation, engagement, and stewardship practices for key constituencies. The MGO will manage their own portfolio (100–125 prospects) while also providing fundraising support with major fundraising campaigns. The successful candidate will demonstrate a donor‑centric approach and the ability to create individualized donor plans matching the philanthropic interests of donors with the funding needs of the School, including event sponsorships.

Essential Functions and Specific Duties

Identify and pursue new donors and funding opportunities for The Bishop’s School

Solicit donors with the capacity to make a major gift ($25,000+)

Secure event sponsorships

Build strong partnerships with faculty and staff to help promote objectives that are beneficial to the School

Develop and execute individualized donor cultivation plans, emphasizing face‑to‑face interactions

Maintain a consistent schedule of 10–15 donor visits per month

Participate in regular prospect management meetings, ensuring that a proper moves management process is in place to move prospective donors in and out of portfolio

File timely prospect reports in Raiser’s Edge documenting contacts, solicitations and meetings

Attend key events to interact with prospects and donors, maintaining a high level of professionalism and living out the values of the School

Perform with a team approach

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree

At least 5 years of proven fundraising experience, with at least 3 years of experience in making personalized solicitations and closing gifts

Experience managing an individual portfolio of prospects and donors

Campaign experience preferred

Commitment to providing a high-level of customer service

Proven ability to effectively engage with high‑capacity, busy individuals

Demonstrated commitment to remain current with the latest giving trends

Working knowledge of social media theories, concepts, and platforms

Intermediate proficiency with Google Workspace and aptitude for learning new technology

Familiarity with Raiser’s Edge and/or other fundraising software

Proficiency in a second language, particularly Mandarin or Spanish, is a plus

The anticipated salary range for this position is $94,000 to $115,000 annually.
