Who we are:
The ASPCA’s Community Medicine (CM) team delivers expert veterinary care through stationary and mobile clinics in underserved communities across New York, Miami, and Los Angeles. We provide quality services that are partially or fully subsidized to help pet owners make informed decisions about their pets’ health, while ensuring dignity and respect for both animals and people.
What you’ll do You’ll provide compassionate, preventive and basic care to over 100,000 animals each year, performing high‑volume spay/neuter procedures and surgeries with minimal paperwork. You will focus on your patients, enjoy a full 8‑hour schedule, and benefit from a supportive, collaborative environment.

Compensation Target hiring range: $160,000 – $170,000 annually, potentially increased for high‑qualified candidates.
Work Schedule Typical Monday‑Friday, 8‑hour days with occasional overtime and one Saturday per quarter. Job is on‑site at the Community Veterinary Clinic, with occasional travel to other ASPCA locations.
Responsibilities
Provide comprehensive preventive and basic care, including physical exams, diagnostics, treatment, medication prescription, and discharge instructions.
Perform pre‑surgery exams for all surgical candidates.
Execute 30‑40 high‑volume spay/neuter procedures each clinic day.
Diagnose and treat post‑surgical complications.
Perform and oversee minor outpatient surgical procedures.
Maintain a low‑stress, compassionate environment using low‑stress handling techniques.
Triage and refer cases outside CM’s care parameters appropriately.
Perform humane euthanasia in accordance with ASPCA policy.
Direct and supervise support staff in pet owner communication and medication dispensing.
Document exam findings, test results, and treatment recommendations per ASPCA guidelines.
Collaborate and communicate effectively with ASPCA colleagues.
Participate in monthly virtual medical rounds, staff meetings, and workshops as requested.
Opportunistically deploy with the National Field Response team for disaster or cruelty cases.
Mentoring & Training
Assist in mentoring CM veterinarians; provide peer training on high‑volume spay/neuter techniques.
Lead refresher trainings on emergency protocols.
Participate in training Veterinary Residents, Interns, and Externs.
Evaluate and refine new medical protocols through pilot projects.
Support research initiatives that improve access to care.
Client Service
Communicate with clients in a non‑judgmental, professional, and effective manner.
Discuss examination and test results to facilitate informed pet‑owner decisions.
Counsel owners about end‑of‑life and other sensitive concerns.

Qualifications
Current California state veterinary license or ability to obtain before start.
Proven ability to perform 30‑40 high‑quality spay/neuter procedures per clinic day.
Ability to mentor and train veterinary professionals.
Fear Free Shelter certification within 60 days of hire.
Knowledge and use of low‑stress handling techniques.
Skillful physical examination, outpatient surgery, and diagnosis of cats and dogs.
Sound clinical judgment and resilience.
Care for self, animals, and others, especially in stressful situations.
Physical capacity to stand, bend, crouch, kneel, and move with potentially aggressive animals.
Education and Experience
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or equivalent required.
Minimum 3 years of high‑volume spay/neuter experience required.
Minimum 3 years in shelter medicine or an access‑to‑care clinic required.
