This position is located in the Critical Area Permitting Section in the Bureau of Coastal Management.
Responsibilities
Serve as a Critical Area Line Project Manager.
Independently evaluate Critical Area Line and other service requests, such as Maintenance and Repair requests, reviewing professional drawings and supplemental documents to ensure compliance with Critical Area Permitting Regulations and the Coastal Tidelands and Wetlands Act.
Conduct field work and collect data for technical reviews to establish and/or certify critical area lines.
Provide professional guidance, assistance, and training to local governments, land developers, consultants, public officials, and citizens.
Maintain organized, accurate, and comprehensive records in the ePermitting database.
Minimum Requirements
A bachelor’s degree in the natural or physical sciences or a related scientific field.
OR an associate degree in the natural or physical sciences or related technical field and at least one year of environmental health or related experience.
OR a high school diploma or GED and at least three years of environmental health or related experience.
Minimum colleges must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Work in all reasonable weather conditions and access non‑traditional work environments.
Physical & Work‑Condition Requirements
Climb ladders, stoop, lift, and carry 50 pounds.
Swim and work comfortably in a boat or open water under rough weather conditions.
Walk and work on complex terrain.
Conduct field tests using delicate instruments requiring steady hands.
Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including boots and gloves.
Maintain a professional appearance.
Drive long distances as necessary; local travel required almost daily.
Travel occasionally overnight.
Participate in emergency preparedness and recovery related to natural or man‑made disasters.
Familiarity with wetland ecology, including plant identification and soils.
Ability to read, interpret, and understand professional drawings.
Knowledge of the statutes, regulations, policies, and information sources related to the SC Coastal Management Program.
Knowledge of the federal Coastal Zone Management Act.
